Can anyone think of an example of two functioning democratic states going to war with each other? I’m trying to and I’m stumped.

But, you are correct, most of the armed conflicts are in countries with marginal democracies at best.
The democratic countries just war with each other economically, and work with each other to keep other countries poorly developed so that we can use them as economic colonies.

February 8, 2007 at 5:07 pm #20888Israel/Lebanon I hadn’t thought of… really with Hamas rather than Lebanon I think. Still, maybe we can add that not having a religion interfering with the democracy (Judaism in Israel, Islam in Pakistan) is helpful.
I was thinking back through history as well, quite hard to think of anything.
War these days is crossing country lines actually. It is much more wars of ideas and faiths it seems to me.

Well still roughly correct! That may be the relationship my country has with Burundi, but the one with Saudi Arabia or China is a little different.
Economic warfare is always *backed up* by armed force of course, but still it seems to me that in real terms democracy reduces war.
Then I could go off on how there has only ever been one *true* democracy in history (classical Athens, which chose people by random lots not just votes) but I will spare you…
