Hi, is there anywhere in the UK that teaches Tummo (not Reiki Tummo)? Is it necessary to be in a particular tradition to be taught it?
Thanks,
TomDecember 12, 2004 at 6:27 pm #2378Tom,
The only teacher who I have come across (I am sure there are others perhaps in Tibet and elsewhere) is Angelique. She gives Tummo initiation to help the Kundalini process as Tummo isn’t an end in itself…

December 13, 2004 at 7:19 am #2380Hi Tom,
Tummo is an advanced completion stage practice in Vajrayana Buddhism and so yes one has to be in that particular tradition to be taught it. The texts and traditions are full of dire warnings against people practicing it without the proper authoristaion of a vajra master. The very least that can happen they warn, if it is practiced without the proper altuistic motivation and philosophical training, is ill health and psychosis and there’s even mention of hell realms – it’s enough to scare the shit out of anyone!
I don’t think its a case of those buddhist meanies holding onto all the goodies. Tummo works with serious and fundamental energies of manifestation and without the requisite training and background it can lead to deeper entanglement in samasra rather than liberation from it. Hell, I’ve been doing healing love for ten years and still find that if I’m not careful it can increase lust rather than transform it. Well that’s just me I suppose because I’m not necessarily practising with the right attitude. Imagine the potential for greater mischief with working with Tummo the wrong way.
Shou-Yu Liang is his book “Qigong Empowerment” give what looks like a non-buddhist version of it and calls it “Achievement through Spiritual Flame”. This doesn’t involve visualising yourself as a diety or using mantras so I reckon that you don’t need authorisation for this. I would recommend a thorough psycho-physical prepartion with all the Healing Tao stuff like inner smile, healing love, fusion, and grounding practices otherwise you’re asking for trouble.
Good luck matey and may providence guide you!
December 19, 2004 at 3:49 am #2382I’m going to be back in the UK in a couple of days. My Tummo teacher is Lama Jampha a disciple of Lama Thubten Yeshe, who often taught people inner fire practice without requiring all the preliminaries. You might want to read Lama Yeshe’s wonderful book, “Bliss of Inner Fire”. Get in touch if you need more actual teaching.
Cheers Julian
