“When one Truly listens, there is no other” Buddha
This is the main theme in the book Reconnection written by Eric. He states “Become one with the person, then heal yourself. In healing your-self, you heal others. And in healing others, you heal yourself.”
The book is part story of his life’s adventures and lessons. As well as simple transmission and practice. It is interesting from the perspective of seeing some one get a instant “download” or a very high alchemical activation, and then with no history or teacher to help him he begins to explore west coast new age and his own experiences with his patience looking for answers. How does one find balance between the child like awe state one can arrive at through these practices and the desire to try to understand (or unconsciously try to control). Reading this certainly made me appreciate my teachers, and the amazing amount of child like exploration Alchemist did before me. He know works with modern scientists such as Gary E. R. Schwartz author of The Living Energy Universe to explore and try to gain some great understanding of this amazing energy world. I am still amazed at the wall between Taoist inner alchemicaly energy body knowledge and the western spiritual and scientific community. But maybe it is for the best as we get to see a whole new group of people rediscovering what alchemists did thousands of years ago.
July 11, 2009 at 11:40 am #31845Hello Dog:
You mention “seeing someone get an instant download”. Do you think this information or reality was always there, he just need to focus on this aspect of himself or something that was never there and was a brand new thing added to him?
thanks,
baguaJuly 11, 2009 at 3:04 pm #31847By seeing I assume I meant my imagination of his description. He got grounded and this kicked off what he was unconsciously trying to avoid. He is still unpacking it and playing with it. He took on great power and responsibility from the life force. Are you around LA? I believe he is around that way. I might even consider going to Acupuncture school out there.
JDJuly 11, 2009 at 3:15 pm #31849I also like the fact that he repeats that if your not getting results it could likely be that you are trying to hard. Like a teen that tries to be different and ends up being like all the other teens. We are all already different and special we just have to accept, witness, or explore our selves.
July 13, 2009 at 10:14 am #31851let me know if you are going to LA for school, i can give some advice, some schools are not as advertised.
Have we met?

July 13, 2009 at 2:54 pm #31857Hi bagua,
Do you believe it’s possible for things to be
added that were never there previously? In that regard: I’m not casting a judgement as to whether
such a thing is good, bad, or even desired. Just
wondering whether you believe it’s possible. Thanks,
StevenJuly 13, 2009 at 3:45 pm #31859Hi Steven:
Nice to hear from you my friend.
Yes we can add all kinds of things we never had. What i refer to is our essential nature, our yuan shen. Its my experience this is complete and does not need anything to be added to it, our cultivation is to clear away our stagnations, blockages, conditioning, etc. to allow this aspect of ourselves to be expressed as our normal, natural self, as it always has been. We can enjoy our dynamic, changing life in a spontaneous way, free from past conditioning, blockages, fantasy and dreams of the future.

In your “model”, do you believe that
things not previously present can be added
to the “essential nature”. That is, considering
the essential nature to already be complete, can it
still nonetheless be added to.I.E. In your terminology, can the “hidden diamond”
only exist as a static entity, or can this itself
also be subject to change.I realize that in your model such a question is
irrelevant toward the goal, but I consider it to
be an interesting academic question nonetheless.Best,
StevenJuly 13, 2009 at 8:24 pm #31863Hi steven:
I would not call it a model, its my direct experience and others. Our true nature is present awareness, its what is always with us and has always been with us, nothing can be added to it by ourselves, its the terrain for all of life to manifest, to come and go. We can add to our knowledge database, emotional experience, etc. We tend to associate our identity with these other things, that come and go, and this association creates separation, polarity and to an extreme fragmentation, when we think these our our self we are not living from our true self.
This is the common misunderstanding, that this true self is static, this true self is creation itself, it is dynamic and spontaneous, when we become aware of this aspect of our self, there is no judgment, no labeling, no measuring, no categorizing, it is freedom from that aspect of the mind. This present awareness is our true nature, when you know this you see the other aspects of our self and things that come and go, but this always remains.
One translation of the I Ching is “The Book of Changes and the Unchanging Truth”, the unchanging truth is our true nature, all other things change. We are both but knowing the the unchanging truth is the key to self realization.
When you truly know who you are you know you are both the whole and part of creation, they two are one and you absolutely know it and will no mistake fantasy for reality.
I would propose these are the teachings of Lao Zi and Chuang Zi.
Hope I am able to express my experience clearly.

I call it this simply for language convenience. I have not had the
direct experience you speak of, and moreover models presented by
others seem completely plausible to me at this point, as we’ve
discussed before. In particular, I’ve had no personal experience
with your thesis that we are already immortal. The model in which
immortality is an acquired state is also plausible to me.This in no way diminishes my opinion of your position, as I keep
an open mind to most possibilities and hold serious positions
with respect.Just some random feelings:
Part of me feels that there may be some commonality between models.
In particular, it may be that when we speak of self, there is a
smaller self and a larger self. The larger self is more core and
is eternal; the smaller self, as recognized in our existence here,
is NOT eternal and is mortal. In this view, your concept could be akin to shedding the layers
of separation between the smaller self and the larger self. Since
the larger self is immortal, aligning with the larger self is akin
to your description of “recognizing you are already immortal”.However, nonetheless the smaller self is alive here in this mortal
realm. There may be some inherent value in its being as well.
It may well be that it helps to provide the vehicle for learning, i.e.
the problems and troubles etc. provide a uniquely pleasurable learning
experience that can not be had by eliminating the rough. I.E. You
are taking away some of the fun and flavor, and maybe streamlining
things to sterility. Thus there may be some value in keeping
distinct multi-layers.Perfected diamonds bore me; Jagged uncut, impure stones are far
more interesting. What say you?S

July 14, 2009 at 10:34 pm #31867Hello Steven:
Life is diverse, life is dynamic, life is changing. How can we live in this diverse, dynamic and changing world? How can we stop from living in the past, attached to the past, trapped in old thoughts, living from our ego and past patterns?
Its my experience taoist practices are about guiding us to live in the moment, with an open mind, an empty mind to allow us to observe and live life in a natural way.
Steven says:

I believe when we are able to live from an open, free space we have lots of fun, we play, we dance, we engage in life in a wonderful way. Im not sure why my writing would lead someone to view things as sterile, quite the contrary there is a fascination in being alive, and being spontaneous. We always have multiple layers, but we know which ones are just playthings and do not allow them to traumatize us, cripple us, keep us trapped in old patterns, dreams, fears.
Steven:

******************************
Just as the Tao Te Ching says, just do not make distinctions, good-bad, left-right, immortal-non-immortal, etc.I never mention a perfect diamond, its an analogy that you are already what you seek. Alchemy has the potential that can allow us to experience this and begin to identify all the multi-layers of our life and not get trapped in the pain and suffering that can result from viewing them as our essential nature. We don’t grant them importance, we see them as things that come and go, a true understanding of the nature of change.
Being able to live from our Yuan Shen allows us to perceive the nature of our thoughts, emotions, fantasies and dreams, to see them as they are and not give them more meaning then their nature. Alchemy is about this too.
All I am expressing is to focus on your direct experience, not your thoughts, dreams, fantasies or desires, but what you experience right now, and do this over and over until this becomes your daily reality, not living in the past or the future. Its that simple, and you will be freed from the things that keep you from the here and now and our dynamic and magnificent life that has always been here. This is free will, the freedom to live in the here and now, to live from your true nature where anything is possible because in this space there is ego creating limits.
Wishing you the best in your journey to yourself.

I have no disagreement with the perspective of how
one should live their life or how they should express
continuous joy in the spontaneity of life and ride
the waves of change through life as a playground.
I think this is completely true; moreover, I think
internal alchemy helps you dissociate your core identity
from the waves of outside influence. In many ways, I feel like I live my life from that space
a deal of the time, and on areas that I don’t, it is a
continuous process of improvement–akin to your diamond
analogy. I love life to the extreme, and am enjoying
being here through the “best” of times and the “worst”
of times. So, on that process, I’m already doing it.
And as such, as part of the play, I ask myself, “could
it be possible to continue this uninterrupted joy beyond
physical death; and if so, how?”. Don’t misunderstand
me. I don’t let this interfere in my joy of the present
moment; nor do I feel that it is inhibiting my ability to
carry out my worldly destiny. I am capable of multi-tasking.However, it is this question that I find worth exploring.
Now you may say that the Tao Te Ching says little to nothing
about the afterlife, and just discusses the here and now
and how to approach life. On that regard, I suppose I can’t
disagree. In fact, from the standpoint of the Tao Te Ching,
one might argue that since we want to focus on the here and
now, that the discussion of the hereafter is irrelevant.
For a lot of people, they can’t even enjoy the here and now,
so what’s the point of discussing things less relevant than the
now. I get that. But that’s not me. I’ve got the “now”
down relatively good, and am working on the weak spots already,
and moreover, have enough free time to explore the question
I mentioned. Thus in that regard, maybe that takes my side project outside
the realm of “Taoism”, since it’s not discussed in the Tao Te Ching.
Well, OK, so be it. I’m not going to limit myself to dogma
written in a book or espoused by a particular group. In fact,
one could say that limiting one’s actions, ponderings, explorations
due to any one particular philosophy is really against what
the Tao Te Ching is trying to teach anyway. Right?Smiles to you,
StevenJuly 16, 2009 at 12:02 am #31871Hi Steven,
Nice discussion!
I just wanted to interject and express what I feel has truth in this statement that you find so compelling regarding joy after death.
There is a parallel to life as in space and time, where as the more present you are to the moment the more you are eternally aware.
Another wards being more deeply aware of the present pierces though the concept of time (which gives you the sense that you are going to die physical) In a sense we are already beyond this physical life and can validate that feeling though a deeper awareness of the moment.
I would also like to say that I understand what David (bagua) is saying about the ego (which maybe what you express as your smaller self).
The mind can take us away from these realities, but at the same time can be transparent as well as you clearly express you are aware of.
Also
You as How, I am curious as to what exactly you mean. Do you mean how as in a mental answer that will satisfy your mind or do you mean how in some more subtle way that is beyond mind and if so would you be able to articulate this?
In fun,
Damon. -
