    A question:

Not always but more than sometimes when I am leading a group into silent meditation, within the first minutes my throat starts to scratch so badly I need to cough to release a very unpleasant feeling in my throat.
It feels like how the throat gets very dry after running or breathing through an open mouth a lot, so the insides of the throat gets so dry you need to cough to get the irritation away.

That is how I feel within minutes of sitting still and going inwardly. I notice it very fast when it starts to occur, my eyes get teary and my throat scratches intensly, and when I try to suppress the cough, my breathing gets stuck.

The only way to try to stop the coughing from happening is to open my eyes, focus on the ground, but often it is too late for that and I NEED to cough to get that feeling out of my throat.

I don’t have it when I am alone, I only have it when I am guiding others, so in a group situation…
I have my ideas about why it happens, but I wanted to hear some of your ideas why you think this happens.

    Hi Wendy,

If it doesn’t happen when you’re alone, but does happen when you are doing a class, it very well may be the physical irritation from the talking you do preceding the meditation. In particular, maybe you are doing more talking in the group as opposed to when you are on your own. Then when you stop talking to do the meditation, your body takes the opportunity to do a clearing.

Another reason why I would suspect this, is because you compare the feeling to having your throat get dry from a lot of mouth breathing, and you mention the word “dry” twice. The solution to this problem might just be to bring a glass of water or water bottle with you to the group, making sure to drink some water and try clearing your throat before you begin the meditation part.

Of course, there could be energetic reasons as to why this happens, but that’s not my intuition from your description. However, having said that, you have to listen to your own voice here–you mentioned that you have some ideas as to why it happens, so you might want to explore that.

Anyhow, just some gut feelings on my part . . .

    My best to you,
    Steven

Maybe it’s also got something to do with deep down you don’t feel so relaxed when you’re leading a group into meditation as when your meditating on your own? Maybe as you lead the group at the beginning you are a little tense, then as you begin to meditate and relax the tension is being released and you get a dry throat as a result, then cough to correct it.

Anyways the dry mouth seems to be causing you some tension if you don’t like it and the only way you can stop is to by open your eyes and look down at the ground. I think during the process of you opening your eyes and looking down you would feel a little more tense than with your eyes closed and that supresses the cough? I don’t think tensing it to surpess it is the right idea, or trying to stop it in any way would be a good idea. Maybe you can try to relax into the cough so that it doesn’t happen or perhaps the best way would be to try to meditate through your initial leading the group long before you get the cough feeling to keep away any stress and see if you can prevent it that way.

Should let us know how you go.

Thank you both for your reply.

I am teaching now for the last 15 years, and I only started to get this reaction the last couple of years.
I never really gave it much thought, as it happens sometimes and with coughing I release it and forget about it…
but because of another incident I started to make links.

For over a week I felt waves of sadness, since I always reflect inside myself about past and present and see how I can transform or digest it, I took that sadness as mine. But this time, despite digging, the waves kept coming, making me extremely sad and very teary.
This is very unlike me, since I process my crap pretty fast.
After more than 10 days of feeling sad, one morning I opened my eyes and figured hey maybe this is not just about my crap, so let me expand myself instead of contracting the sadness by thinking it is mine.

As soon I started to expand my energy body the waves stopped and I felt great and strong.
Haiti waves had been hitting my energy body but I did not understand… but now by connecting with it in an expanding way the waves could go THROUGH me instead of keeping them captured in my body where I needed to process them.

That is when I started to think about my very bothering feeling in my throat during some meditations with people. I absorb the energy instead of allowing it through me, so I need to cough to release the tension.

Since that idea, I have been sitting in meditation with my groups differently, and the meditation to me is much better doing it this way!

People that are very caring and loving can sometimes
absorb the stuck energy of others as an empathic gift.
What remains is to main boundaries and to prevent from
integrating this in on a personal level; the coughing
may be energetic intuition to clear and to avoid
integrating it in personally. In other words, the
recent onset of the coughing phenomenon may be the
result of a higher awareness and energetic intuition
than what you had in your earlier years. Just a theory,
    anyway.

But if you’ve now discovered a more effective approach
in your group meditation, all the better!

    Thanks for sharing,
    Steven

I’d guess you are picking up the group psychic fire and it is triggering your old issues with your male side not being expressed (throat), overflowing up to eyes (liver).

Yang wants to expand, so you surrendered to the impulse, which is the healing. I suspect that the planetary shifts happening are pushing you to function on a larger scale, which pushes you old buttons about being hidden and yin.

    you are being outed.

no more closet queen for you.

    🙂

Throat thingie can happen in contact with presence of competing authority

(well issuing command to foreign bodies may be considered a challenge to the controlling entities)

    opening eyes.
    Coughing throat.
    All just reactives.

    Strategy is not reaction.
    Accept the pressure.
    Keep working
    continuosly relaxing the throat.

Don not change internal structure in any way
    it is throat gestalt,
the obvious way of gestation when verbal communion.
    In time it moves through.
You just birthed an elemental that then works your work.

If need be wait. In silent moment if needed. There is time. But not for forcing.

    Correct.

    Amen.
