If you are interested in history from a non-orthodox viewpoint and in etymology, this article might be very satisfying. It has many obvious connections with daoist thinking though that is not its focus. It goes way beyond what the title implies.

The Ancient Turkish-Hindu “Spiritual” Solution to War and Collective Discord.
By Gene D. Matlock
What is a valid spiritual solution to wars, collective discords, and evil in general? Scriptures, singing, preaching, conversion tactics, bible-thumping, speculation, visions of white doves, idealistic political activism, lathering our enemies’ faces with dirty, germ-laden kisses, turning the other cheek, throat-bursting hallelujahs, and other bizarre behaviors may not be spiritual at all, but ineffective and potentially destructive gropings in a world getting darker by the minute.
If each human’s real self is an eternal and subtle entity or spirit encased in a large piece of animated clay, and if this self actually exists, there must be a scientifically applicable and measurable technology for people to reconnect with it…
October 5, 2006 at 12:21 pm #18341The world is an interesting place and I’m trying to keep an open mind.
You’ve mentioned a new consciousness that some are trying to attain. I’ve often wondered how this new consciousness will spread. It seems to be a recurring theme that the new consciousness doesn’t need to become universal, but significant enough to effect others. It sounds like a priming of the pump idea. If enough people accept the new consciousness, then their thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs will affect others in such a way that the new consciousness will begin to spread throughout the world under its own power. It’s an interesting and noble idea, but I’m too practical to accept the tipping point idea.
There are many people and many paths. Some walk the path of the animal. Their whole life is about themselves. Some walk the path of the human. They realize that we can be more than our base instincts and desires. But some walk the path of the destroyer. They only live to tear others down.
I can see how the new consciousness could effect the path of the animal and human, but what of the destroyer?
There are many example of those who have walked the path of the destroyer. They often wish to wipe out what currently exists so they can recreate it in their own image.
However, the path of the destroyer is filled with paradox. Sometimes they help the world move forward. Maybe they destroy something that needed destroying. Maybe they create something that the world needed. But any way you look at it, new life will grow after their path of destruction is finished. Life will always find a way.
In nature, wild fires are an example of something that follows the path of destruction. Small controlled burns are great for clearing away the decay and providing a rich environment for life to grow. However, if left uncontrolled, wild fires will destroy more than necessary and cause more pain than required to restore the health of the land.
Among humanity, the latest example of those who walk the path of the destroyer is a group who wishes to bring about the apocalypse to hasten the return of the Mahdi. Since he took office in August of 2005, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran has spoken about the return of the Mahdi in almost every one of his major speeches. He believes that the majority of humanity needs to die (99%?) before the Mahdi can return. He’s hoping to help bring this about. I’m not sure how the new consciousness can affect him in a positive way.
October 6, 2006 at 2:50 am #18343I believe we don’t know what is going to happen. I believe the lifeforce works with who it can. I believe that we are in an unprecedented time of spiritual expansion making it possible for “people” to ride a huge wave to another “place.” I believe that there are people in resistance to this wave and people in appreciation of it. I believe the new consciousness has been affecting us for decades and is probably reaching a peak point soon. I believe we are cocreating this expansion with the lifeforce. I believe the lifeforce knows what to do with all the different kinds of beings it has created; it knows how to nurture all its parts (the ten thousand things).
I believe our job is to be ourselves and not to interfere with others being themselves or the process of the lifeforce doing things with us all. And I believe that when we think about “how” or “if” or “when” we fuck up all over the place.
Like you say: “Life will always find a way.”
I believe my job is to continually develop my ability to realign with the Source rather than to acclimate to whatever else is going on, and to hold a positive intention.
Who knows what the dao has up its sleeve. This is a Mysterious Universe.
Compassion is a good thing. So is trust.
Let’s be in awe of what might happen.
Smiling, Alexander
