Hello, I just within the past few months found Mantak Chia’s work and have been very interested in it. I’ve done some Tai Chi meditative exercises and the inner smile (although still working on doing it better). However, I have a large problem with energy. I am constantly tired and sometimes lack the concentration to even attempt meditation. This isn’t something that has started since my discovery of meditation, rather, it’s been on going since I can remember. I have heard many reasons… from the way I breath to me just being lazy. I don’t really believe the latter because I try very hard to continue on despite the way my body feels.
I was hoping there is something that I could try to help me with my problem. I’m still working my way through “Awaken Healing Light of the Tao” but it’s going slow due to my problem. I also had the thought I might not be doing the meditations right, don’t suppose there are any instructers in SE America?
Thank you for your time!-Jason Bennett

It would be a great idea to visit some doctors: a western MD to check out your organic system, and a chinese TCM (traditional chinese medicine) to check out your energy system. They are both of great value. For example, a female friend of mine just went for a routine check up and they found that her hemoglobin levels were 1/3 what they should be! One blood transfusion later, she has more energy than she has had in years. The MD is just to make sure there is nothing serious going on at the organic level. The TCM will most likely be the bigger help in resolving underlying issues. Hopefully their help can help kick start your energy up a notch to explore meditations.
And, working with the inner smile is something that can be done no matter how tired you are. If you are just slumped in the chair and feeling kind of dopey, notice where in your body, how deep down, in whatever layer/dimension, somewhere there is a nice sense, maybe a smiling sense, and maybe it even connects to / radiates to some other isolated bits of you. It doesn’t have to be a job to meditate – it can be a fun interesting exploration of the unexpected world of you inside you.
best of luck,
ChrisFebruary 20, 2005 at 8:10 pm #2789a cupla years ago i had the same problem and standing practice did wonders. 30 minutes a day. followed it with 8 extra vessels qigong to circulate qi and ensure it didnt stagnate.
the other thing to bear in mind is that qigong can often release deep seated, hidden fatigue. you just have to work thru it.

I take it cupla = couple? What’s the standing practice? (I’m still trying to go through the excersizes to get to the microcosmic orbit, if that’s what you’re talking about. I’ve got a problem with being a perfectionist… I can’t stand moving ahead if I think I have one of the preperation exercises wrong.)

What’s the 8 extra vessels qigong? I had a teacher that said something about qigong (boy, I wish I’d paid attention now =) but he moving on to bagua… Of course, that was for martial arts and I’m not sure if it’s the same thing as what’s taught here.

I guess my only problem is ignorance in relation to qigong. I’m not sure what you’re referring to…
Thank you for the reply! I appreciate the advise eminsley (oh, and I hope I didn’t offend with the mistype… as you can see I can’t spell =).
Sincerely,
Jason

the standing practice i did was a standing in stillness posture. i could describe it to you, but without being able to see it, you may still do it wrong. it’s similar to the HT embracing the tree posture. i ws taught by a taoist monk who coached me the first few days till i had it right. these types of practices are also called I Chuan. ron diana does a lot of that.
anyway, after th standing in stillness, i did a 8 extraordinary vessels qigong to move the energy and ensure it wouldnt stagnate. if you dont know the practice dont worry. you can do the micorcosmic orbit or the healing sounds or anything that will circulate the qi.
if you dont know what qigong is, just navigate around the site and read some of the articles. its basically just movement of the body to guide the qi, become friends with it, learn from it, and develop the body-mind. of course, whole books have been written about it. thats just a simple working concept.
