I have recently begun my journey into learning Fusion 1 on my own. As always, I have begun with Mantak Chia’s book and Michael Winn’s articles. The latter has taught me that most of the former is not actually Fusion 1 and to only worry about the first 4 formulas. I realize that Fusion may be a hot topic and I welcome everyone’s feedback with their experiences and insights.
Getting to the root of it, the first 4 formulas as described in Chia’s book seem relatively “simple” to me. Below is a VERY BASIC summary of how I interpret them, after beginning with the inner smile:
1. Form the four baguas in the front, back, and sides, gather the energy in the center of the lower dantian (cauldron), form into a pearl, circulate in the microcosmic orbit.
2. Form the 5 energy collection centers (pearls) based on the 5 organs and collect the organ energy in the center bagua: kidney and heart, then liver and lung, then spleen in the center. Same for the back and side baguas, gather the energies in the cauldron, circulate in the MO.
3. Connect the sense organs to the 5 organs, draw the energy into the organs, and basically repeat formula 2.
4. Acknowledge the negative emotions in each organ and draw the energies into the respective pearls in the same manner as formula 2: kidney and heart, liver and lung, spleen. Collect into the cauldron pearl, circulate the MO, gather the energy to close and end with chi self massage.I know that the Fusion 1 practice and how it is taught has changed over the years, especially how Michael teaches it. For one I know he incorporates the Creation Cycle/Nourishing the 5 Shen qigong as well as using the creation/positive cycle before the controlling/negative cycle. Chia says to use the controlling cycle, which is the correct order (kidneys, heart, liver, lungs, spleen), although the way they are collected is not necessarily this cycle (kidney-heart together, liver-lung together, spleen last). In which manner is this collection process changed to incorporate the creation cycle?
I discovered that Marie Favorito has a guided Fusion 1 and 2 CD that is only $15, which I am planning to purchase. I know that she had been the primary Fusion 1/2 instructor at the HT USA summer retreats and am wondering if anyone has tried this CD, and if her style of teaching is similar to Michael’s or closer to Chia’s? Also, how has Chia’s method changed from the book?
I also recently discovered that the “Nourish the 5 Shen” qigong is a part of the Deep Healing Qigong set. That was going to be my next dvd purchase for qigong sets I learn, and am wondering if the way it is taught on the DHQ dvd is the same as on the Fusion dvd. I also discovered that Winn’s YouTube channel has the Pangu Mystical qigong set from the Fusion dvd.
My last point of discussion relates to formulas 5 through 9. I understand most of them are fragments from Kan & Li. Where do the virgin children and their animal offspring, the 5 planets, etc. come from? Michael states that shooting the pearl out of the crown is a Tibetan “powa” practice that is not recommended, so how did this end up in there and does he still teach this? I would have thought of it as sending awareness of an energy body, not necessarily your essence shooting out that you need to suck back in.
Anyway, thanks in advance for those who decide to become a part of this conversation!

September 14, 2013 at 8:18 am #41166Hi,
I learned Fusion from two M.W. students and both thought the controlling cycle first and then in fusion 2&3 creative cycle…I recently bought M.W. dvd-s and have to say, I like them very much and they helped me to improve and understand my practice better…
M.W. explains that he changed sequence because, if you go directly into control cycle and there is a lot of negative stuff, you get jumed… So, despite the organs havent cleared yet, we nourish virtues in creative cycle and then we put one “negative” stuff into… so we have four white end one black “sheep” and no vice versa…
The other thing are collection points only five and not 16 or 17… much easier to deal with five… 🙂
I would recommend to practice the fusion sequence in beginning as thought by M.W. and letter on, you find your own way and do it as you like and feel is better for you…
Peace, Jox

September 16, 2013 at 1:17 pm #41170neither has much to do with organ charging
September 16, 2013 at 1:23 pm #41172“to the biologist, hate is a passion that is of equal interest to love. Like love, it is often seemingly irrational and can lead individuals to heroic and evil deeds. How can two opposite sentiments lead to the same behaviour?…
the putamen and insula are also both activated by romantic love. This is not surprising. The putamen could also be involved in the preparation of aggressive acts in a romantic context, as in situations when a rival presents a danger.”
September 16, 2013 at 4:30 pm #41174Hi Jeff,
Just a few brief comments below, as it would take me
a book to answer all of your questions in any kind of depth.>>>Chia says to use the controlling cycle,
>>>which is the correct order (kidneys,
>>>heart, liver, lungs, spleen), although
>>>the way they are collected is not
>>>necessarily this cycle
>>>(kidney-heart together,
>>>liver-lung together, spleen last).
>>>In which manner is this collection process
>>>changed to incorporate the creation cycle? The Control Cycle is kidneys, heart, LUNGS, LIVER, spleen.
However, as you’ve accurately pointed out, the collection sequence
in Fusion is not the control cycle. The Creation Cycle process in Fusion is a completely different setup,
the mandala of the pearls is in a different arrangement. The mandala
is circular with the Earth pearl in between the Fire and Metal pearls.
There are a number of different exercises that use this mandala
and use the virtue qualities of each element. See Michael Winn’s
Fusion 1 AUDIO homestudy course for comprehensive training in this.>>>I discovered that Marie Favorito has a guided Fusion 1 and 2 CD
>>>that is only $15, which I am planning to purchase.
>>>I know that she had been the primary Fusion 1/2 instructor
>>>at the HT USA summer retreats and am wondering
>>>if anyone has tried this CD, and if
>>>her style of teaching is similar to
>>>Michael’s or closer to Chia’s?Marie’s meditation CDs, namely Inner Smile, MO, and Fusion 1/2,
are handy references for the ORIGINAL transmission of these
meditations from Master Chia. Michael greatly changed these,
to incorporate his own new insights. In particular, Marie’s Microcosmic Orbit CD is the original
transmission of spiraling and smiling at the points of the orbit,
whereas now MW teaches primarily the Wudang orbit, or even
Spinning Dragon orbit.Similarly, Marie’s Fusion 1/2 CD is the original transmission,
most closely in line with what you have listed as “Formula 4”,
with a little bit of material from Fusion 2 (some Thrusting
channel, Belt channel stuff). Michael has greatly modified
the original transmission to incorporate getting more into the
emotional and feeling aspect of the 5 elements, and spend time
doing work in the Creation Cycle first. To be honest, I like
the modifications that Michael has made and do think they make
the practice much more effective, although I also appreciate
Marie’s documentation of the original transmission which is
also helpful to see the forest through the trees. So both
are good, and I recommend both.>>>Also, how has Chia’s method changed from the book?
Master Chia, like Michael, is constantly changing things,
and modifying his practices. Consequently, what he is doing
now is nothing like either Michael or Marie. As a general rule,
what he does is he keeps the original practice and just keeps
making it more and more complicated, and also starts bringing in
all kinds of Kan and Li material to make it all even more complex.
Everything is now “cosmic”. While all this is great for
seasoned practitioners, it is not so great for beginners in my view.
It just makes things more complicated than they need to be.
One thing that Master Chia does now in Fusion is that he chants verbally the 8
cosmic forces of the bagua. So while you are doing Fusion, you
are chanting vocally: Kan, Li, Gen, Tui . . . etc. Expect to
not only do chanting, but to pull in planets, stars, shamanic
spirits, and all kinds of things into the basic Fusion practice,
if you want to do Master Chia’s modern approach.Personally, I say stick with Michael’s presentation, using
Marie’s CD as a skeleton, but that’s just my recommendation.>>>I also recently discovered that the
>>>”Nourish the 5 Shen” qigong is a
>>>part of the Deep Healing Qigong set.
>>>That was going to be my next dvd purchase
>>>for qigong sets I learn, and am wondering
>>>if the way it is taught on the DHQ dvd
>>>is the same as on the Fusion dvd. They are the same within 90%, just a few subtle differences.
To be honest, this qigong on the Deep Healing Qigong DVD is
covered more comprehensively in my view than on the Fusion DVD,
but this is just my take. In fact, in the Fusion 1 Audio course,
there is usually a handout on this qigong in there and the
handout mentions that it comes from the Deep Healing Qigong DVD.
Consequently, I usually recommend people get the DHQ DVD when
they get the Fusion set. As you know, I’ve written glowing reviews
about this form repeated on this site, so it is good to get.>>>I also discovered that Winn’s YouTube channel
>>>has the Pangu Mystical qigong set from the Fusion dvd. This qigong used to be covered in Fusion 2, but Michael has been
doing it during the Fusion 1 class instead in recent years. The
other qigong on the Fusion DVD, namely the Eight Extras form,
is not covered until his Fusion 2,3 workshop. It is not part of
the Fusion 1 course and is really a different topic.>>>My last point of discussion relates to formulas 5 through 9.
>>>I understand most of them are fragments from Kan & Li.
>>>Where do the virgin children and their animal offspring,
>>>the 5 planets, etc. come from? The animals, to some degree, are really part of Greater Kan and Li,
and the 5 planets have to do with Greatest Kan and Li.
Each of these are week-long courses with a lot of content in themselves.>>>Michael states that shooting the pearl
>>>out of the crown is a Tibetan “powa” practice
>>>that is not recommended, so how did this end up in there
>>>and does he still teach this?Master Chia had MANY teachers, not just One Cloud. To my
understanding, Master Chia added it in to Fusion after learning
this practice from a Tibetan teacher. Whether Master Chia
still teaches this or not, I have no idea. Michael however
does not teach this.>>>I would have thought of it as sending awareness
>>>of an energy body, not necessarily your essence
>>>shooting out that you need to suck back in.No, because it is not just your awareness/consciousness
ala the Yang/External Inner Smile. It is sending out
a pearl, which is concentrated piece of awareness. Michael
does let you play with this a little bit in his LKL course
where he does a meditation called “Cracking the Crown”,
but the pearl remains attached to you through an energetic
cord . . . it is never disconnected.Qi,

There is much in these Golden Dawn rituals and ceremonies that is of the greatest value; but from the first grade to the last it is all vitiated by these dangerous elements taken from Dee and Kelly. Furthermore, in many places, the practical working is not provided with adequate safeguards, so that, to the present writer’s personal knowledge, an operator working with the Golden Dawn [Enochian] rituals runs very grave risks of breaking down his physical organism, or of obsession by evil entities.”
-PAUL FOSTER CASEThe Book of Ninja, the ultimate ninjutsu manual, was penned in 1676 by a ninja known as Fujibayashi. Born in the post-civil war era of Japan, Fujibayashi collected and combined information from the ninja clans of Iga – regarded to be the homeland of the ninja – and compiled it into an authoritative book. Known as The Bansenshukai, this book has now been translated into English by the Historical Ninjutsu Research Team.
The Book of Ninja begins with an in-depth introduction to the history of the times. The heart of the text takes us into the secrets of guerilla warfare and espionage. We learn spycraft, mission planning, concealment tactics, and infiltration techniques. We put on the mindset of a warrior. And those wishing to attain the highest levels of ninjutsu can discover how to kidnap enemies, perform night raids, make secret codes, and utilize the Ninja’s system of divination.
The Book of the Ninja is the final say in the world of the ninja and the ultimate classic for samurai and ninja enthusiasts alike.
-The Book of Ninja: The Bansenshukai – Japan’s Premier Ninja ManualThe Shaolin priests will was strong and he did not want to re-enter the business of the world, so he followed the holy monk preaching and traveling on the sea and mountains. I do not know where he has gone. The guest Xu Hong met him off shore and obtained the secret meaning. He gave it to the guest Qiu Ran, and the guest Qiu Ran again gave it to me. I tried it and experienced the verification, then I believed that the sayings inside were true. Unfortunately I did not obtain the secret of Xi Sui and so that I could travel to the domain of Buddha. Again it is unfortunate that my will is not strong and I cannot be like the priest, forgetting the business of the world. I am only able to use the small branches and flowers and use it to extend my life. I feel guilty inside.

I would suggest for example to check Bihar School of Yoga materia as an alternative.
Here important are their kriya yoga and prana vidya practices and of course various other practices for each chakra and nadi.
Alternative to develop so called emotional intelligence is to mine one’s personal memory storage and learn to extract what ever is needed.
Both tranquil abiding (samatha) and special insight (vipassana) are to be used.

So I tend to coordinate the speed of the orbit flow with the natural flow speed of the energy in the region. If energy gets bottlenecked in a certain area, I slow down in that area in response; when in an area where energy is moving with a faster, heavier flow, I speed up and gain some momentum…
-http://forum.healingdao.com/general/message/20851/The theta rhythm is an oscillatory pattern in EEG signals recorded either from inside the brain or from electrodes glued to the scalp. Two types of theta rhythm have been described. The “hippocampal theta rhythm” is a strong oscillation that can be observed in the hippocampus and other brain structures in numerous species of mammals including rodents, rabbits, dogs, cats, bats, and marsupials. “Cortical theta rhythms” are low-frequency components of scalp EEG, usually recorded from humans.
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theta_rhythmReaders who think Kerouac’s 1957 masterpiece On the Road was a young man’s book are startled to find that Hippos was written in 1944. The proto-Beat was only 22, a “strange solitary Catholic mystic” from Lowell, Massachusetts. His friend Burroughs, cold, scary and a connoisseur of extreme behaviour, was 30; his years of success with Naked Lunch and Junky came later, in 1959. The third of their troika of strung-out, druggy, sexually ambiguous visionaries was Allen Ginsberg, the gawky, Jewish, voraciously homosexual poet, whose ground-breaking Howl and Other Poems was published in 1956.

It is the collection of past personal experiences that occurred at a particular time and place. For example, if you remember the party on your 6th birthday, or you remember having breakfast this morning, that’s an episodic memory. They allow you to figuratively travel back in time to remember the event that took place at that particular time and place.
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Episodic_memorySorry for my bad English.
It’s clear that immediately these ancient Chinese schematisms are not necessarily very attractive, so if for example coordinating breathing with various phases of microcosmic orbit is artificial then also associating colours or emotional states with various organs is also.
As a meditation technique combined with energy practice reasons to practice like that are quite clear.
For example during some of these Fusion practices one has to locate baguas, spiral, create colours, analyze, count, and so on.
All these for example work as a preliminary withdrawal, but also first of all start to charge body as it is never charged during casual daily activities besides few other things.
So these are real formulas, but maybe potential goals could be achieved with other very different kinds of formulas as well.
Or maybe there are some formulas which work much more effectively.

Ps. For example Zhao Bichen gives, in my opinion, enough rational explanations when to coordinate breathing with some other things. Also one could notice that, although it doesn’t come very well through translation, it seems to have multi-level logical presentation.

A former student has sued Bikram Choudhury, the millionaire founder of a wildly popular yoga franchise, accusing him of sexual harassment, discrimination and defamation.
Piotr Redlinski for The New York Times
Mr. Choudhury, who is 67, at an event last year. A former student said he harassed her at a training course when she was 20.
According to legal documents filed this month in Los Angeles County Superior Court, Sarah Baughn, 28, a Bikram student, teacher and international competitor who lives in San Francisco, said she considered Mr. Choudhury her hero until he made advances toward her during a 2005 teacher training course in Los Angeles.Ms. Baughn, who was 20 at the time, said she was uncomfortable when she first noticed how other female students would brush his hair, wash his feet and give him massages, but she chalked it up to cultural differences. Then, she says, he offered her his diamond Rolex watch, which she did not accept, and told her he had known her in a past life.
“What should we do about this?” the lawsuit claims Mr. Choudhury said. “I have never felt this way about anyone,” he continued, adding, “Should we make this a relationship?”
Mr. Choudhury opened his first yoga studio in the early 1970s in the basement of a bank building in Beverly Hills, Calif. A national yoga champion from Calcutta, Mr. Choudhury was said to sleep on the studio floor, spurn the advances of women and offer classes by donation only. Then Shirley MacLaine, an early student, gave him some advice.
“She said no American respects anything that’s free,” Mr. Choudhury recalled at the 2012 Bishnu Charan Ghosh Cup, the yoga asana competition named after his guru.
Now, Mr. Choudhury, 67, charges $25 per class, oversees hundreds of studios on six continents, owns several Rolls-Royces and is called “Yoga’s Bad Boy” by Yoga Journal. His copyrighted yoga sequence is practiced in a 105-degree room often nicknamed the torture chamber.
“Sarah dropped out of college to study with Bikram, and every penny she had went to him,” said Mary Shea Hagebols, Ms. Baughn’s lawyer. “She was a true believer and student.”
Ms. Baughn says she rebuffed Mr. ChoudhuryÂ’s repeated advances and at times tried to redirect his attention to his wife, also a teacher and the founder of USA Yoga, a yoga sports federation with Olympic ambitions. The legal document claims that his advances continued; he is accused of pressing his body against hers while adjusting her posture, whispering sexually charged comments into her ear, ordering her to kiss him in front of other trainees, and assaulting her in a hotel room in Acapulco, Mexico, during a teacher training.
Her lawyer declined to say whether Ms. Baughn ever reported any of these accusations to the police, but she did speak with senior teachers at his Los Angeles-based Yoga College of India. “Sarah wants whatever justice the jury decides so that this never happens again — that’s her primary goal,” Ms. Hagebols said.
Neither Mr. Choudhury nor his wife, Rajashree, who is also being sued for her role in running the business and the teacher training program, could be reached for comment. But a spokeswoman for USA Yoga said the group was confident that the court would determine the truth.
“In the interim,” said the spokeswoman, Rachel Golden, “we believe it is vitally important to continue to support the millions of devoted yoga practitioners around the world in reaping the benefits of their practice.”
Reporting Mr. Choudhury’s behavior to the senior teachers did little good, Ms. Baughn says in the suit. They promised that he was harmless and “innocent, like a child,” she said. Ms. Baughn said she was told that she needed to “separate the man from the teacher” and understand that powerful men were often flirtatious.
“Vulnerability and devotion are big parts of the practice,” said Benjamin Lorr, the author of the memoir “Hellbent: Obsession, Pain, and the Search for Something like Transcendence in Competitive Yoga.” “Bikram creates this mentality that the outside is phony. There is no path but this path, and everything that happens in this path is just a part of your yoga, that you have to learn to be strong and get past it.”
Considered a guru to celebrities like Madonna, George Clooney and Jennifer Aniston, Mr. Choudhury wears a Speedo while presiding over teacher trainings that cost $11,000. Over 300 would-be teachers practice three hours of yoga per day in a sweltering hotel conference room. They also study anatomy, Hindu philosophy and BikramÂ’s views on life, love and ethics.
Ms. Baughn says her financial investment was one reason she continued to study, practice and teach the series despite her accusations that Mr. Choudhury attempted to sabotage her career and competition results when she repeatedly refused his advances.
“There was a culture of fear,” Mr. Lorr said of the Bikram teacher trainings he experienced, where he tried to interview other students. “No one really wanted to go on the record with me. They thought they would lose their certificates, that all the hard work and money they put into it would be taken away.”
Some Bikram studio owners are wondering how to confront the accusations.
Tricia Donegan, the owner of Bikram Yoga on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, explained that some students did not even know that Bikram was an actual person.
“Bikram’s name may be on the door,” she said, “but my particular space is a safe haven.”

The Kumbh Mela administration and the police on Friday prevented naga sadhu Swami Shayamanand Saraswati of Juna akhara from taking bhu-samadhi (living in a dug up pit, which will be covered with mud from the top without food, water or air).
The Swami had announced that he would perform the feat for nine days, beginning Friday morning around 11.15 am.
Addressing a press conference at the Kumbh Mela media centre, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP), A C Sharma said that the proposed act of the Swami fell into the category of somebody attempting to commit suicide.
“Such being the gravity of the proposed act, the administration was in no position to allow him to take bhu-samadhi,” said the DGP.
Talking about the issue of providing security to the VVIPs and VIPs, who are likely to reach Kumbh over the next fortnight, the Director General of Police said that the police had made all the arrangements to accord security to them, if they did not turn up on the main bathing day of Mauni Amavasya (February 10) and Basant Panchami (February 15), both of which will be a shahi snan day.
Sharma further said that checking of vehicles would be intensified from Saturday onwards in the run up to Mauni Amavasya.
“The policemen have been directed to check vehicles, irrespective of the position of the occupants. Therefore, people should cooperate when they are asked to stop their vehicle for checking,” he said, adding that even vehicle belonging to the Director General of Police could be checked, if need be.

-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FactotumJaaa, there was that somehow hazy Stephen King posting earlier…
But I have also studied some of his novels in Swedish just to learn some basic language skills.
My favourites are Shining, It and Imsomnia (Finnish cover below).
By the way this earlier mentioned Ninja manual, that is Bansenshukai, surely is worth (1.) purchasing. There is very firm China connection of course and if that tradition is not any other way interesting, it’s worth (2.) noticing that there you have quite special kind of multitaskers which is anyway the only right way for some.
And one should really notice also some other translations from same direction.
For example ‘The Secret Traditions of the Shinobi: Hattori Hanzo’s Shinobi Hiden and Other Ninja Scrolls’ is quite nice; especially worth (3.) noticing are sloka type of warrior mantras in the end with translation and advice how to use such things (…for example, the last scroll involves the 100 tanka poems for Shinobi. A classic Japanese form of 5-7-5-7-7 syllables, the tanka can be allusive and poetic. These translations are straight on with brief explanations. Consider tanka #79:
“If you always assume you are facing the enemy, you will never drop your guard in any way.” This, says the accompanying text, “…is a blunt and basic message: complacency and soft-heartedness cannot coincide with a warrior’s life. If a ninja is always ready in the mind and always at the edge of his ability, there will not be much that escapes him.”…).Meaninful such things are for example for situations where one needs to make quick decisions so that all possibilities and their outcome are as swiftly as possible permuted for the desired result before execution.
Again METHOD OF LOCI will prove it’s superiority.
