I am back from an alchemy retreat in the UK and Stonehenge, which i will write about shortly. I should be on the forum more for the next few months.
I hope everyone tuned into the powerful opening of the Equinox.

MichaelSeptember 23, 2008 at 2:32 pm #29173Sorry for the foolish question but… what is the Equinox and how do you get ready for it?
September 24, 2008 at 1:56 am #29175“first day of fall”
and
“first day of spring”The time when the amount of daylight is *equal* to the amount of darkness,
the “equinox”.It represents a gear shift from a time when one of them is greater
to a time when the other is greater. In the transition comes a short window of neutrality, upon which
the opportunity for new patterns can emerge. Thus through intention, introspection, and openness comes the
possibility of accelerated growth and change. It is these activities that one can do which can allow for
the capturing of new potential and more profound growth.S
September 24, 2008 at 7:48 am #29177Jade,
It’s the foolish questions that get you somewhere….
At this moment I don’t have time for the long answer it deserves.
So I’m sending you to my list of past emails, one on the spring Equinox, one of the other four nodal points of the year. Autumn Equinox is like the Spring Equinox, a balance point between the yearly yin-yang cycle, when day and night are equal lengths. Only in autumn the yang is declining, yin is growing. The article I’ve linked to gives a description of a ceremony to do. The difference witih the Spring ceremony
is that in Autumn you would focus on letting go, clearing out the old in order to make room for new growth later. You may need to re-sign up your email at the top of the Articles page if my server does not detect a cookie in your computer, before you can read the link.

September 25, 2008 at 9:46 am #29179September 25, 2008 at 8:35 pm #29181I was under the impression that it would be unwise to start new endeavors during Autumn and (more so) Winter. What is your (anyone’s) opinion on this? If you think that is correct, do you think that the Equinox and even Winter Solstice are exceptions?
Thanks
RyanSeptember 25, 2008 at 11:48 pm #29183You really couldn’t pick a BETTER time to start anew than
the Winter Solstice! It’s the darkest it will ever get (in total hours),
and now the days begin lengthening–indicating new expansion. It’s the point of extreme yin turning into growing yang.
If ever there were an “Intrinsic New Year”, this is it!
It’s much more meaningful than Jan 1, which is just a calendar celebration.Of all auspicious times, I’ve personally found the Winter Solstice to
be the MOST powerful–far more powerful than the Summer Solstice or
the Equinoxes.Since according to our calendar (although not necessarily Chinese
philosophy), we START winter on the Winter Solstice . . .
winter is the PERFECT time to start new endeavors.P.S. Regarding autumn, while the increasing darkness/yin is
indicative of things winding down and coming to an end, is it
not true that you are effectively doing something new when you
bring something to an end?S
September 26, 2008 at 3:09 am #29185Autumn Equinox is a great time to initiate new YIN activities, spring supports yang activities. But both are activities – yin does not mean sitting around and wringing your hands until spring comes….
September 26, 2008 at 3:01 pm #29187Thank you Steve and Michael for your responses. I get confused over this whole yin activity and yang activity thing, being that yin and yang are in each other. Practicing 5 animals qigong could be considered a yin activity because it’s doing things with the body, and a yang activity because of the movement. sitting and doing a mental meditation could be considered yin because you’re sitting, and yang because of the mental involvement. could you please give me an example of what kind of activity would be good to start at the Autumn Equinox (and in the Autumn season in general), Winter, Spring, and Summer.
Thanks
RyanSeptember 28, 2008 at 11:58 pm #29189I like this conversation as in demonstrates the balance between outer and inner guidance. Which is what parents and governments play with. One could argue that Confucianism was birthed by Taoist being to vague, and demanding outer freedom or less outer guidance and control yet refused to show people how to cultivate inner guidance which would have led to naturally there being born greater freedom. Instead vagueness called in its opposite. Michaels response instead of being listing specific which can close our box, opened up your box with something to to vague not to specific. This is interesting parenting, to one expand the box yet at the same time give clear guidance on how to get in touch with your inner guidance so that you can find your way with in this expanded box. I have found it takes time to build trust and to learn how your inner sage speaks to you. I have found working with YiJing to help reinforce my intuition and clarify it for me. For me it comes as a feeling like a craving as well as in day dreams. I am watery and slip into meditative moods easily. You will learn in time to trust our personal mood of intuition and it will become more powerful. We tend to move more from greater outer guidance to less and less from needing parents completely to just enjoying there company. The energy is naturally going yin in that it is relaxing to gravity letting gravity pull it deep into the center of gravity which is an octave of sorts representing your spiritual center for some peoples this is the dark night of the soul and others a beautiful experience of easy deep inner journey.
returning is the movement of way making
weakening is its function.
I hope I qouted that right, it is from the Dao De JingOctober 23, 2008 at 5:43 am #29191The scout is a different kind of animal from most other humans. He lives a life on the edge of adventure, sees and hears things that most would never dream possible, and life to him is filled with endless excitement and adventure.
-TOM BROWN, Jr.I don’t want to be pedantic (because autumnal equinox is one month past and there is still two months to winter solstice), but I thought that if somebody wants to get valid textbook explanation to what are Solstice and Equinox there are easily available in the Net various resources.
Although NATHANIEL BOWDITCH’s ‘American Practical Navigator’ is an encyclopedia of navigation, a handbook on oceanography and meteorology, and a maritime glossary with many tables useful for especially those who have to be experts in these (difficult) disciplines it also has few chapters which in very concise manner explain some basic astronomy.
Many this kind of subjects are bit too difficult to really bring into expression on this kind of forum and it’s also in my opinion unnecessary because whe have some of these marvelous textbooks available so easily. It also needs sustained effort from the student himself or herself of course.
So in the CHAPTER 15, 1519. The Ecliptic, pp.237 both solstice and equinox are explained. There is actually very much important and interesting material concerning various astronomical topics if one only knows enough math.
HELLUREI
Though denominated Solitary Messengers, they are not lonesome spirits, for they truly like to work alone. They are the only beings in all creation who can and do enjoy solitary existence, albeit they equally enjoy association with the very few orders of universe intelligence with whom they can fraternize.
