Interesting site. Just out of interest, I would class the Bates method as more mental than physical. He never realy advocated exercises as a means to improve sight, but rather mental and physical relaxation.
Have your friend check out Quantum Touch, Quantumtouch.com. I recently discovered it and am very excited about the possibilites. Just had a distance healing and could feel the energy, will attend a workshop in a couple of weeks. If he can’t find a local practinioner or workshop, I would advise a distance healing. Keep us updated. If skeptical, why not give a shot anyway. Couldn’t hurt and the cost is a fraction of a DRs fee.

Just thought this might help.
The author Ernest Holmes who could cure people of illness (cancer, etc) by affirmation (without laying hands) said in few of his books “Love and Law” and “Science Of Mind” that he cured himself and many people of eyesight problems by affirmation.
What he found was the most of the times these were psychologically caused by unconscious thought patterns in these people that made their subconscious mind ‘block out the vision’. For example, people who have pessimistic view of life, can sometimes cause their subconscious to try to block out the sight of the surrounding/of life. To block out any unloveliness.
For these cases he uses the affirmation of Truth that “The Perfect Spirit is Beauty, Loveliness and Joy, and since God is everywhere, (name this person) can never look away from beauty. Beauty, Joy, Loveliness etc is everywhere he/she looks.”For some other cases, its just a belief of people that their eyesight will go (belief that due to old age/ too much reading/ runs in the family etc). He was one of these people when young, and one day he found out what happens and he starts to affirm everyday “There is One Perfect Vision, that perfect vision sees thru my eyes”. His concept is that, spiritually, it is the function(of seeing) that makes the organ(the eyes). If you heal the function, the organ is healed.
He said after a while (perhaps a few days or weeks),it improved gradually and he had to throw away those old thick glasses he had for so many years. And then he used the same affirmation to treat many others of his patients.
