“The ten thousand things carry yin on their backs, (kidneys)
and wrap their arms around yang. (heart)
Through the blending of Qi they arrive at a vital state of harmony.”
-Lao Zi, Ma-Wang-Tui version 168 BC (chapter 42, text A),
translated by Robert G. Henricks
I was trying to figure out what was meant by the english translation “yin on their backs, and wrap their arms around yang”, and realized that if it refers to the kidneys and heart, and one follows the this with the next line this could be interpreted as a version of Kan and Li.
Interesting and creative interpretation. I always thought it meant that the micrcosmic orbit channels – yang rising up the spine, and yin descending down the chest – were attracting/embracing their polar opposites, creating harmony between the personal self/microcosmos and the greater self/Nature/macrocosmos.

Another view:
The Back is Yang and is used to harmonize yin, the Five Yin Organs. Yang treating Yin.
The Arms wrap the front of the body, this is Yin harmonizing the Yang Organs. Yin treating Yang.
This is Yin-Yang therapy, how one harmonizes each other. So many ways to say the same thing. Yin-Yang, Hun-Po, Du-Ren, Tiger-Dragon, on and on. Such creativity they had.
