I had wondered if it wasn’t more an issue of sameness versus stimulation. Cultures like China and many traditional tribes are/were relatively isolated. Change rarely occurs, and outside influences are not always welcomed. On the other hand, Hindu/Western societies are much more aware of the “other” simply via geographical realities. They were able to stay in more constant contact with other societies. Much like the tendency for people undergoing sensory deprivation to hallucinate things that are not there, I think the multiple souls thing may be a similar response to a somewhat-analogous situation. Just some thoughts.
China is a very diverse cultural, emormous variety, many dialetics to the point the cant understand each other, its not and has not been a mono culture.

The multiple soul theory is universal in the “old religions” all over the planet. This is well documented by peter levine is books on binary soul theory. The mono-soul theory is very new, it arose in last 1000 years.
To emphasize bagua’s point, China has 56 different ethnic groups with separate languages and a long tradition of inhabiting their locality. How many does the USA have?
