Hi all. This Saturday I have the opportunity of presenting Chi Kung to cancer patients who have been chewed up and spit out by the western approach. The conference has been set up by an enlightened doctor responding to patients’ requests for alternatives.
I have a 50 minute presentation on history and reasons to practice and then three one hour time slots to offer a group experience.
I am curious what your response would be and approach you would take both in attitude, expectation and actually what you consider valuble and essential to impart in an hours class.
Please share….barryApril 19, 2006 at 2:20 am #13028Hi barry,
I teach Qigong & meditation to Cancer patients, as well to the general public. I have been working with Gildas Club and have learned alot about how to teach it to critically ill people. I run a program at a Major Hospital also.
My approach is that I keep it in line with as a “alternative” to complement their personal choice of therapy. You really have to gage the crowd pretty quickly, on how to present it, which can be hard. Some groups will be able to absorb alot and others will be very skepticle, and closed down.
50 minutes presentation: Have a good handout for them to take home, with a suggested reading list of quality book authority’s. Also have some data; case examples of what qigong has done for people. There is alot posted on the web you have to do some research. A Powerpoint presentation would look nice or even a good flip chart.
Be advised that emotions will be high, some tough questions and people that will challenge the validity.
Barry Question:
(I am curious what your response would be and approach you would take both in attitude, expectation and actually what you consider valuble and essential to impart in an hours class.)I never talk bad about western medicine, I think the two systems both have their advantages & disadvantages. Cancer patients will be very weak and going through alot keep it simple. Utilize terms that westerners can understand, I never talk in Esoteric Pinyin or anything like that it will mean nothing to them.
I teach a medical Qigong system I learned from Dr. Xiao Chen Guo, it utilizes more on techniques for specific cancers, diseases and deep balancing. Meditation is good, simple practices are best these will be a general presentation.
Healing Sounds, Ocean Breathing, Meditation, most of these people could be used for the first time.
Attitude: Be receptive and positive; I always teach it from a 50/50 standpoint of tradition and modern applications. I Utilize a Five tone Qigong Music Therapy also , very beatiful music in all practice sets. It is designed to give benefits for anyone.
Working with Cancer patients is different based on the disease some techniques will not work on certain types of Cancer, some you will get a total turnaround with everything else they are doing. Some people it is too far gone and we try and ease their time left, give peace of mind.
My very first Cancer client had full blown pancreatic cancer, I really was not ready it was back in 1993. I taught her Tree Qigong, basic Meditation and Joint Qigong.
She live 2 1/2 years beyond her so called death date, I poured my heart and soul into her also and she was a fighter. So less is more… played here.
Hope this helps, talk in terms everyone can understand, in this environment it will be a general presentation, each cancer patient will be different, with different needs. I genreally give individual attention to help with what is going on with each person.
My situation personally was from a deathly disease standpoint I started these practice at 12 years old and learned them little by little. So I always give my personal story to break the ice. I Re-balanced from 6 months of combination Meditation, Qigong practices.
Good luck, glad you are doing this to bring these practices into the mainstream and help more people in society.

Made it totally accessible as chi kung is at its root. Surprised at how much I had integrated in order to share. SO glad you are doing your work. they were so hungry for it. Take care, barry
