I just learned Primordial Qigong recently. I strongly feel that my right side is Yang and left is Yin. Should I just go with it?
April 12, 2007 at 10:49 am #21963This is something that I have found intriguing for some time, especially as other teachers say the opposite – right is yang and left is yin.
The intellectual solution that I have come to is this: yin is always hidden in yang, and yang is always hidden in yin. So, while the right may appear yang in that it is the doing side that engages in the outer world for us right-handers, it has to be yin at a deeper level to be moved into doing. The opposite would be true for the left arm.
An analogy would be that a mountain is yang, but it has to also be yin because it was moved into that position by larger forces.
Now, maybe you are left-handed and this argument doesn’t work for you. In any case, you can look for different levels of yin and yang for right and left. I now don’t really care about it, and just do!
April 12, 2007 at 4:34 pm #21965I wouldn’t let my mind worry this, Christopher. You will spontaneously resolve it through practice.
When I first started doing Daoist practices and learned that the left is considered the yang side (and acupuncurists call it “your father’s side) I was taken aback and confused. The only intellectual explanation I had for this was that everybody else who said the right is the masculine side (and that is virtually Everyone else!)was seeing how the external energy appears, while the internal energy actually flows opposite from that. Similar to what Chris/Voice is saying.
But after some time of practice all doubt left me and it seems clear to me that the left is yang and the right yin. How this plays itself out has to be an individual thing for each of us. Why don’t you just practice in the way you were taught and let it show you what is happening inside you. The form itself will teach you. And that’s not just with Primordial. I initially found this out through the practice of Pangu which counter-rotates the left and right side thrusting channels into the central channel balancing and harmonizing them.
Have fun with it!

Prenatal, left is yin and right is yangthis is common philosophy, but is not too important in primordial from my view. We all have physical and energetic predominant sides, eventually there is not right, not left, just Tao, you move in Wu Ji state, no more thinking mind.
