April 2, 2005 at 5:53 pm #3910Have a look at the forum and maybe ask your question there again. Maybe you can find some proficient acupuncturist that knows that certain style…
wishing both of you well

April 2, 2005 at 5:55 pm #3912Peace,
Oh man, I feel for you. My mother died of colo-rectal cancer and my father from pancreatic cancer. It is a sad thing. And, it is great that you are trying to be of help.
I remember that the pain got increasingly very bad for my mother, and she took increasing amounts of some heavy pain reliever.
Breathing techniques to relieve pain? I don’t know. It seems by that point there is not much that can be done to relieve pain.
I think at this point your father is at the point of needing to deal with it spiritually. Does he pray or meditate? If he doesn’t yet, now could be a hard time to introduce it. But, I guess it doesn’t hurt to try. Does he have things from his past that he needs to come to terms with? Those would be good to work with, in whatever way works best for him.
There is a really nice CD with all sorts of perspectives and meditations on death and the dying process from different spiritual perspectives – including an amazing piece by Thich Nath Hahn. It is called “graceful passages”.
If you know how, you can do energy work directly or at a distance. And, you might want to look through “The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying” to prepare practices for the inevitable.
Sorry that I don’t have any solutions for the pain; hopefully someone else will.
take care,

April 2, 2005 at 10:19 pm #3918Hey, I spent time with my dad and used massage as a way to connect to him physically and also create an atmosphere and space for sharing. At the end of his life he needed (and so did I ) to find opportunities to complete some basic misunderstandings and emotions. Healing touch offered that.
I have massage in my background though. If you don’t, consider asking your father if you could just sit and place your hands on his pain. Or rub his feet or his temples. It may seem he wouldn’t do this, but I found my father open to the weirdest ideas (for him) as the end drew near.
I hear your desire to help him relieve his pain, but that is temporary. What is deeper is the space you can create for both of you to see each other in clearer ways. For you to touch his fear and vulnerability and for him to trust your love. Just my thoughts, baba

April 3, 2005 at 10:40 pm #3924April 3, 2005 at 11:05 pm #3926Since your’re on this board, Michael Winn has a “Deep Healing” Chi Gung DVD. Ofcourse that type of thing will do no good if it itsn’t your step dads cup of tea and has to be forced on him. Its a rather long, kitchen sink form. Powerful, but its got a lot of concepts in it that a newbie would find uh bizarre. (at least my dad did)
From a more conventional point of view; find out what his favorite comedic movies are. If there’s a particular actor or style, get’em or rent’em, all of them. Watch them w/ him, laugh w/ him. Laughter is wonderful for the body. A good movie sucks you in, and can be wonderful for disassociating pain. Find out his musical tastes and try them as well.
Another venue is Anne Wise’s ‘Higher Performance’ audio CD’s. Four CD’s of guided meditation. They are very good. Plus they are easy, you just lie down and listen to them.
They start w/ getting you familiar w/ the Alpha, Beta and deep relaxation states. There are two healing meditations involved in them. One where you associate your pain/illness with a ‘being’ on couch you can ‘talk’ to . The other has you falling into a ‘Healing Circle’. I picture it as some sort of stonehenge-like area where you let yourself get healed.
Last there are mental techniques w/in say Eckhardt Tolle’s NOW series and the Sedona Method book that offer escape from pain through heightened awareness of the present.
You and he will get a lot of advice. You’ll try things, some will work, some will work for a while and many things will be aggravating failures. When older men face pain and loss they don’t neccessarily need or want to be told what to do. Follow his lead, show him respect and rent some funny movies.
Peace 2

peaceApril 4, 2005 at 6:13 pm #3932What I meant by a simple exercise was for example slowly raising the hands up as you breath in, while straightening from a slight crouch, then slowly lowering hands to the sides while breathing out, and also focusing on the feet at this breathing out stage. Repeat for ten to fifteen minutes–doing it for less time would mean not really establishing the mind-body into the new relaxed rhythm, not getting the energy flowing really, not receiving much detoxification from the deep breathing (doing deep breating WITHOUT doing heavy exercise means you’re getting more of a detoxification/oxygenating effect).
A more potent variation is to do the same exercise, but focusing on the lower dantien as you breath in and raise arms/straighten crouch, and switch focus to hands and feet as you breath out etc. Maybe have them do the first one for a few weeks, then have them move on to the second one (what I did).
Everything of course with muscles very relaxed, gently pulled in chin, tongue on roof of mouth.
Always finish with collecting qi in the lower dantien, emphasizing relaxation, calm.Someone’s pain and state of anxious exhaustion from an internal infection was alleviated from just one fifteen minute round of the first exercise I mentioned.
April 4, 2005 at 11:39 pm #3934I have it, I like it, I don’t use it much. Its a long ‘kitchen’ sink kind of chi gung exercise. It has animals, colors, seasons sound. I think its about 24 minutes or so. It promises great things if done 21 days in a row. But Its probably not everyones cup of tea and unless one is motivated not an ideal first video.
His Fundamentals II has a nice deep elemental form, easy to do, easy to break down into its separate elements. One of them, ocean breathing is great simple chi gung, for anyone w/ back problems the ‘Crossing the Ocean’ movement brings great release.
I just received the Sedona Method DVD. It was just $4.95 and instead of being a cheap sales pitch, it had over 2 hours on their simple ‘mental yoga’ to release emotion and pain. It showed people in pain getting relief. For $4.95 it can’t be beat.
Peace
