No, just focus on sending qi down deep into the Earth.
Then let the qi naturally rise up of its own accord; it knows where it needs to go. The qi will rise up easily; it is the sinking down into the earth and having your consciousness on this that is the important part. Focusing on the actual cycle makes everything too mental, which is exactly what we are trying to correct.S
and of course pushing hands practice is meant to refine the rooting practice and test it. Some years ago I went to a weekly pushing hands club each week for about 3 years. By working with various partners in a group setting it quickly shows the flaws in structure and energy flow. The guy who set it up emphasised quickly going beyond fixed routines to spontaneous and appropriate response. Lots of people came along from various styles – internal mainly. Another way of getting structure checked – in amore dynamic way perhaps. Of course if training daily, much easier.
