After the invention of gunpowder and the subsequent elaboration of firearms, men no longer felt the need to spend a decade or more of their lives learning skills that no longer seemed practical. A man could now defend himself, or cause great damage at a great distance from his objective, with weapons.

Personally I would suggest to also make some investigations concerning the real scope of Shaolin practices.
These seem to be quite thoroughly intermingled with Taoist ones.

About 90 people associated with the nation´s largest crime syndicate attended, many of them bosses of its direct affiliates. Enryakuji had rejected the Shiga prefectural police´s request a day earlier to call of the event, saying it was too big to cancel on a short notice. In 1976, the Japan Buddhist Federation, an umbrella group of more than 100 Buddhist sects, called on temples to refuse any services designed to help organized crime. Enryakuji, on the border of Kyoto and Shiga prefectures, is designated a World Heritage site.

Once Milarepa had disobeyed Marpa, he was in the right state of mind to receive the teachings, and that was why he began teaching him at that time.
It may seem contrary to the principles of Guru Yoga to question the interpretation of this story which has been repeated and confirmed by hundreds of years of Tibetan scholarship. But my interpretation is in many ways more respectful of Guru Marpa than is the traditional one. According to the traditional interpretation of the story, Marpa was forced to reveal his strategy a little too early because of the meddling of his wife Dagmema. As Lhalungpa says in his introduction “The ordeals are hastily ended and much against the plan, Marpa grants Milarepa the teachings”. According to my interpretation, Dagmema’s “meddling” helped Marpa to produce the result he had been trying to achieve all along. Marpa would therefore have been working to some degree in collaboration with Dagmema, and not at cross purposes with her.

And it’s not only Shaolin temple but for example those sôhei militants (so called warrior monks) as well.
But here again the most important practices would not be directly dealing with becoming skilled in combat but something else.
Like it’s not practical just anybody to try to become accomplished martial artist, it’s probably simply better to learn constantly, if slowly, putonghua and new characters than reading too many academic articles or too extensively material written in one’s native language.
These kind of things can easily also turn into self-indulgence.
In my opinion.

December 29, 2014 at 7:01 am #43558The semicolon or semi-colon (;) is a punctuation mark that separates major sentence elements. A semicolon can be used between two closely related independent clauses, provided they are not already joined by a coordinating conjunction. Semicolons can also be used in place of commas to separate items in a list, particularly when the elements of that list contain commas.
-http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SemicolonIf one is interested to learn some Chinese and one also would like to have, if not immediately full books, some material in Chinese about qigong and neidan; Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming could maybe help.
Some of his books have quite nice selections from qigong and neidan texts with tentative translations and short dictionary, but quite often also explanations are surprisingly dull or misguided.

Ps. Sorry for my broken English.
