Taoism is the future, we all know the future is an illusion!
(2012 is right now…)
If we are true taoists then what are wasting our time with, that draws us away from our center? Away from the dao?
For me, it is the fact that my parents expect me to go to college. This conflicts with the supreme natural forces, because I cannot study the dao in all my classes (as much as I try to integrate it).
The point is there should be a REAL university where we can study the dao.
The dao mountain university is wonderful but you can only get continuing education credits, bullshit! Why not have a true university where we could get real degree in healing, taoism/buddhism, theology, philosophy, psychology, music, whatever! A real university! I know there is a similar university called Naropa (naropa.edu) but that was started by Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche, a buddhist. Maybe the healing dao could cooperate with them and offer a new program for study!
Or forget that, we should have our own university, offering degrees in what really matters: this.
Im tired of wasting my time. You?
November 22, 2004 at 5:56 pm #2083Nice place. A lot of people put off going to college for a few years or take a few years off during college. Or just not go in the first place. Follow your bliss here and if there’s no bliss, go with the path that feels best and if there are no good feelings, go with the path that is the least resistant/easiest. Start up your own program in feeling good. When you master your own chi flow to the point that nobody can fuck with it, the world is your wish fulfilling jewel and will give you anything you want. Going or not going to college isn’t a big deal–don’t let it kill your chi if it’s truly the path of least resistance. Focus on the girls, parties, etc.
Good luck!

November 23, 2004 at 5:10 am #2085Parents expect you to go to college…
What will you do when they will expect you to marry and have children
What will you do when they will expect you to take care of them
What will you do when they (other they) expect you to work long hour on others wills, just for a righ of being in monetary economy
What will you do when they will exercise right and ask you to die for themYOur life is programmed. If you fuck with that, expect struggle and resistance. When help is offered, that is a friend of tao.
Remember that if samurai of old drew his sword at improper occasion (example: in anger while on court, even if half drew it) it caused death to his blood if he didn’t perform gutcutting.
It is said that every organization is on its own course. It has its dominant strategy. Which has showed value at certain task or circumstances. And which is suppressing its alternative. A shift occurs only in times of crisis. When a crisis occurs that dominant strategy cannot solve, the suppressed strategies are possible solution. If dominant strategy is kept on power in crisis, organization is as dead.
If organization is society, then society fails. Swann recognized three wildcards for society: grand environmental crisis, grand powerstruggle between earth powerhouses, clash of allien encouter.
Until then you are operating in shadow. Forcing your way in mainstream will invoke resistance. There is nothing againgst applying your way while walking on the way of society. These are called skills.
Be wise. Lorber emphasizes that old witches that were burned in inquisition were so not because they were not possesed, but because they were (and so disresonated with others who believed with passion in other vision) and failed their faith. There is always a way.But then, my friends think I never do anything, that I am hiding in what I do in society, my female friends think I am stupid and my family is still ful of yearning for what could be. Fuck that. I am fine.

I’m a university prof and I’ve seen bright people like you waste their time, their prof’s time, and their parent’s money going to university when they don’t want to go. Don’t go.
But, what should you do?
Like Yoda suggested, follow your bliss. But, there are many blisses, three keys ones are: body-bliss, service-bliss, and mind-bliss.
Body bliss you experience when doing your martial arts, and activities in which the lower tan tien is key. Service bliss you experience when doing things for others, be they plants but especially people, and your heart center is worked/opened. Mind-bliss you experience with intellectual activities, like done in university (when you find the appropriate content for you).
I wouldn’t recommend going to Naropa until you really know what you want to do. It is so easy to hang and waste the parent’s money, and then later figure out what you want to do and not have their money to fuel it.
I suggest finding some basic job, the service of which you feel to feed you. Keep doing your martial arts for the body. Keep reading.
Save your cash and go travel around this county or further. See what people do. Experience the energies of the land and culture of different places. Do drop in classes in martial arts in every small town you come to. Visit Healing Dao instructors or students in different places. There are all sorts of organic farms, intentional communities and monasteries in which you could do some volunteering.
You’ll soon figure out what you want to do in this world, not just for yourself, but as a part of this world. It might take a couple of years, but you will be one wise dude. And then you will be able to use your parent’s money wisely when going to college for some trade, or to university for something else.
Who knows who you are and what your place(s) are to be?
Live, man. But, please keep things open with your parents. At some stage in your path, you will meet your parents and your other ancestors deep in your bones, and it isn’t a good experience unless you’ve kept the love.

November 23, 2004 at 10:11 am #2089Going to college does not have to conflict with the supreme natural force. Within the Tao there is much compromise. Much conflict arises out of ego. We should be no ones puppet. As a martial artist there was geri, loyalty to ones sensei. As a son there is geri, loyalty to parents for the love, caring and many things they have given. To reject there requests out of hand, particularly for selfish reasons is to break a soulful trust.
I found college to be about 4 or 5 hours of work 4 days a week. The rest of the time can be spent searching/learning in a young enthusiastic environment. If you don’t have the discipline to withstand a few hours of classes a day, you may not have the discipline to live a complete life. Find a school in a location close to a taoist setting to study at.

Colleges of Chinese medicine are where a lot of that is happening. Beyond Chinese medicine, they generally also offer qi gong training and some internal martial art. To take qi gong to… to improve the general level of qi gong in the west, there needs to be more practitioners who have a substantial background in Chinese medicine. There is just a strong basis that you’d never get without it.
Asheville, North Carolina, has a lot going for it. M.Winn picked an interesting place to settle down.
There’s Daoist Traditions, College of Chinese Medical Arts, which is striving to teach classical Chinese medicine, not the watered down “traditional Chinese medicine” that is a pruned-back version that was formed during the Chinese “cultural revolution”. There’s also UNC at Asheville, for whatever aspect of a more usual college experience that you want.
Try searching yahoo for:
Asheville Tao
Asheville DharmaAsheville is also a major hub for sustainable culture, permaculture, neo-agrarianism, whatever you want to call it. Creating a culture that is in more harmony with the land is something that simply has to happen, there is a movement re: it… All the way from total in-the-country eco-village versions like Earthaven (outside of Asheville) to “urban homesteading”, like Path to Freedom.com (a permaculture house in the urban Los Angeles area). Good resources to learn/read about this sort of thing is Intentional Communities.org, and just about any book by Wendell Berry (good starters are The Unsettling of America, or Art of the Commonplace).
I’m not saying that Asheville is “the only place to go”, but these sort of characteristics are important to look for anywhere – if that sort of lifestyle path seems right for you. Worth looking into, learning about.

November 23, 2004 at 12:28 pm #2093One of these days! Brevard, to be more specific. Check out Warren Wilson College outside of Asheville–very alternative, very well respected.

Two of the big guns in one town… while you are at it, you should introduce Ron to your Sifu–I’d like to see Ron into something more internal than Thai boxing–he’d be good at it.
