Hi all, a quick question about the I Ching ,and the 8 trigrams specificaly, as an Alchemical formula. I am a student of Frank Alans and I practice and teach Ba gua zhang. I read once that the I Ching was a natural alchemical formula. I was wondering if someone could elaborate on this. I practice Franks Ba Gua Alchemy and I was wondering if there were ways to use the energies of heaven, earth, wind, thunder, mountain, and lake together to create an alchemical energy in the same way that water and fire can be brought together? Also are there other Alchemical mediums besides fire and water? If anyone has any advice please comment. Thank you for your time.

I would check out fusion. If you have not done fundamentals 1&2 fusion would most likely be hard to get. Alchemy is done at simpler levels of three. Also note that those energies(the eight forces or trigrams) are still present just in there primal state in alchemy. You can also over lay sun moon female male sperm egg ect over the base primal fire primal water or true yin true yang. Hope that helps, I am looking forward to hearing from others. I do know of I ching meditations that seemed fairly complicated but still sounded wonderful, practiced by a Bagua teacher I met in China. Mantak chia even added aspects of trigram chanting as in yin yang yin from kan & li practices to fusion I believe.November 28, 2008 at 3:56 pm #29688Thanks for responding. I am already somewhat familiar with One Cloud’s formulas I am more wondering how the I Ching and especially the 8 trigrams can be used as a an alchemical formula. How does it differ from One Cloud’s formula? I think that I read an article by Michael Winn where he said the I Ching could be used as an alchemical formula. I think that was him. Have you ever heard that before, if so can you point me in the right direction where I could find some more info on how the I Ching can be used as an alchemical formula. Thanks again for your help; if you have anything else to add please elaborate.

shenchiNovember 28, 2008 at 8:31 pm #29690I do not see a formula but I am no Lu dong bin or Michael Winn(kinda rhymes) I see a map and it is Alchemists that create formulas out of this map our language. You can certainly work at the level of eight, chanting the eight trigrams and working with the eight deep energy channels even steaming through the eight channels, but again soul Alchemy is deeper and at the level of three. But maybe I will be enlightened to a different point of view. Still learning all the time myself. You might want to check out Michaels FAQ and his articles section.
November 30, 2008 at 11:28 am #29692Thanks that was a big help, I will def check out that facts section. I will also check the articles section as I am pretty sure that is where I read that in the first place. If you find any new connections please feel free to let me and share with the rest of the community. Thank you again for your time.

I think it would help you to read texts by some Taoists who use the I Ching as their language for explaining alchemy. That may inspire you. One classic here is The Inner Teachings of Taoism by Chang Po tuan, another with a lot of I ching symbology is The Secret of Everlasting Life by Richard Bertschinger (may be out of print).
All of my fusion of 5 Elements 2/3 level is based on 8 extraordinary channel/8 trigram theory, which i think is really the foundation here.
