Your teacher said, “How do you know that what you have understood is what the author actually meant?” I interpret this in the situation of where someone can know you. He may think that he knows you, but he does not. You know yourself better than anyone, just as the author knows what he means in his writings better than anyone.

I understood what you meant, I just changed the words meaning to my liking – it won’t happen again.
That is why I *asked* him to respond, rather than demanded it. If he chooses not to respond, I don’t have a problem with it.
