Hah ok well i guess you are probably earth or maybe metal and adel, probably water or maybe earth.
Let me know if i’m right. If not my theory doesn’t sit ๐
June 9, 2012 at 8:57 pm #39373Yes the smoking thing you say at the start is right, of course it is. It’s a great vent of anger. It’s not supressing the anger, it relaxes you and the anger vanishes. It’s a medicine. I smoke maybe 2-3 cigarettes a month for this reason and maybe another 15 a month for enjoyment when i drink. I like it, i am sure it won’t give me cancer such a few amount. I think the lung cancer more comes from people who smoke heavily and their lungs just can’t take the smoke any more. I mean it’s not rocket science to know that if you keep breathing in smoke and give no chance for your lungs to repair you won’t be able to breath. I love smoking in moderation and wouldn’t want to stop. If i wanted to i would stop. I smoke with awareness and enjoy.
Anyhow… With so much stuff (both true and partially true) regarding smoking in the media i dislike discussions about smoking because it’s pointless to discuss, and an example of a confrontation that gets very few people anywhere. But thats beside the point. Isn’t it better to avoid an argument than to argue. Some arguments are needed but most aren’t. I think in the west we are taught you need to confront things, make them right. But things are wrong everywhere, you can’t confront everything you’d wear yourself out. Pick your targets, avoid those that don’t require confrontation. It’s not like i quickly run out of the room if the news is on, i’m happy to listen to it and just make no judgment on it, in one ear and out the next as such. But if the news was getting me down like adel said it was, i wouldn’t watch it. If someone punches me i try to to avoid it, not supress it. It’s hard work to suppress, and i’d rather save my energy for something else. Infact i can even use the anger, punch, or arguement and twist it around so it goes in the direction i want. Then i have more energy.
It’s like someone who wants to be rich but can’t do math, and trys to become a mathematician ๐ They can confront it by learning math step by step from high school level, get fustrated the whole way and never become the great mathematician and become rich like they always dreamed. Or they can think well hey i love the thought of being a mathematician but i don’t mind golf and i’m good at that. I’ll have a go at golf and see how we go with that.
See it’s not supression, it’s avoidance and redirection. In my opinion that is the heart of the tao. Not enlightment, but becoming one with nature. To me this is beyond enlightment, beyond awareness. It is the ACTIVE flow you can achieve while you are in the moment. I don’t begin to say i have achieved this but i have tasted it and it appears to attract me at the moment.
Best to avoid and keep on your desired course, next best to twist it around to the same direction as yourself, failing this i will confront. But confronting doesn’t always work so it’s not the best solution anyhow in my opinion.
June 9, 2012 at 9:15 pm #39375I love your posts!
All parts of me are glad your mother left your father. My own life experiences tell me people signal their intentions long before they act. Your father’s painting of Saturn is dark & foreboding & a classic representation of mythological arcetypes that can lurk in our subconscious.
You have such courage to hold your ground & ask the images what they are.
You inspire me to practice deeper. Thank youJune 11, 2012 at 8:19 pm #39377hi,
Do you mean the strongest element in the five element birth chart
or the element in the day stem?Adel
June 11, 2012 at 8:54 pm #39379I have had three experiences where I have
felt myself distinctly in that grounded
center. All have been in extreme conditions.as a baby in my crib (details are fuzzy);
when I was in an accident and thought that death was next;
while going thru a breakup that became violent. The last one was the strongest maybe because I was
an adult. In the worst I came home to a room full
of blood. I was exhausted and became hysterical,
crying on my knees. Grabbed a pack of cigarettes and
smoked them all (Steven I really appreciate your post
on smoking….having had smoking issues that gave me
a lot of thinking). While I was on my knees crying and
smoking I saw myself from deep inside. I saw that I was
acting like any “normal person” was supposed to act when
walking into that sort of situation. Sort of like reading
from a script. “Walks in to bloody room, freak out, cry
and feel awful and guilty”.Once I was in my center I saw that I was being manipulated
by outside forces being made to feel guilty and in the wrong.
Standing in my center I knew that it wasn’t true, there was
a sense of deep love and trust for myself. I knew I was doing
the right thing and I had to keep going on. The happiness I
felt at that moment was overpowering and I passed thru several
months in this golden state. Nothing could hurt me but I was
not numb, my heart knew what was true and what was not no
fuzziness, I also felt a deep love for the partner whom I left
and a sadness that he was unable to see from his center. That
golden center was open and breathing and I was living from
there. Trusting the center was a given, and the center and the
life force are one and the same. The problem: up until now I have only been in this space when
crisis hits. All of these experiences happened before I began
practicing. Once I started practicing (about 4 yrs ago) I
felt that same center but only while practicing. 6 months ago
I started really doing the grounding practices which I had
always skimmed over because they made me tired.I think in one of the above posts Steven says that you will
just naturally change by doing grounding practices. That is
what is happening and that center is opening and starting to
encompass more of my daily life. But I changed the way I practice
with 90% grounding every day for 1.5 hrs.
For me it is all about the grounding work.
AdelJune 11, 2012 at 8:59 pm #39381Thank you Qtface,
Thanks for feeling for me, my heart lit up with a smile.

June 12, 2012 at 6:44 am #39383Mmm i’m not sure, probably the birth chart. I’ve never heard of day stem
As far as i’ve read in TCM everyone has an element they are most controlled by, and that causes them to be suspect to different types of illnesses. Everyone has all the elements in them, but one seems to be stronger than the others. Thats unless you can overcome it by balancing them through meditation. But even still i think if you lose your centre your dominating element will shape your character.
June 12, 2012 at 1:34 pm #39385At your level of smoking (assuming you don’t increase the level),
your attributed health risks are almost zero.Small story:
One of the times I quit in the past and consulted with a doctor,
the doctor told me that you don’t start to show any risks at all
until you reach 10 pack-years and then docs start to worry at 20 pack-years.
This means “if you smoke a pack a day for 20 years, you have a
serious risk of lung cancer, heart disease, etc.”.Doing a quick calculation at the time, this means that an
average of 4 cigarettes a day is about the upper limit on
a smoking habit and still not show any health risks, because
that equates to 50 years for risks to show, and 100 years to
be burgeoning with smoking-related diseases. So, yes, at your level, you are probably perfectly safe health-wise,
i.e. no additional risks beyond base level are likelyHowever, that wasn’t the point to the post.
It doesn’t matter to me whether it is good or bad
for your health or whether society “accepts it”, the only issue
that has any real import is how it affects spiritual development. It is the anger suppression that is the issue,
regardless of quantity.Despite illusions to the contrary, you don’t just get
anger release, it is indeed anger suppression. You don’t get
something for free. When you put purchases on a credit
card, you have to pay for them eventually. Yes, you get
short-term anger relief, but you’ve only pushed it down
to be dealt with later. If that is OK with you, then fine.
But similar to the credit card, you are saying “I don’t
want to deal with the payment now, charge me more later”.
This is akin to drinking coffee when you are tired, rather
than getting sleep. Short-term symptom relief means
a sudden energy boost, but then you work/drain the adrenals,
and later you feel even more tired. You get $3 but end up
paying $4. This is the same with smoking, except it is
with anger. That’s why it is worth considering.
Followers of this path are interested in spiritual
cultivation, and getting very clear, clearing away
the layers of emotions, traumas, and other fluff
that gets in the way of being able to live from
the core of your true self, from being able to live
centered in your being . . . The less clutter you
have buried in your infrastructure, the more spiritual
force you have to be able to connect beyond yourself
and develop more of an enlightened spirit. You have to face it, to erase it.
And that takes a tremendous amount of courage.
Smoking, on the other hand, is by far easier . . .
However, it does not clear away the root issue.
Instead, that is left for later. But if you instead work on centering yourself in
your being, and creating a neutral space where these
things can dissolve, then over time you will see
real rewards. It is something that you will
experience directly for yourself, and you will
not need to enter into a theoretical discussion
to have someone convince you.But you do not have to believe me.
I in no way feel that to be a requirement.Qi,
StevenJune 12, 2012 at 2:08 pm #39387Adel’s question is relevant.
Let me give you a short informal primer on Chinese astrology,
and then you can go back and answer adel’s question:Everyone is familiar with their “Chinese animal”;
each Chinese new year (end of Jan/beg of Feb) designates
a new animal. What most common people don’t know, is that you have not
only an animal for the year, but one for the month, one
for the day, and one for the hour. Moreover, you have one of the five elements for each of
those also. Thus an animal and element for the year,
an animal and element for the month,
an animal and element for the day,
and an animal and element for the hour. The correspondence for the DAY, is what Adel
was referencing in “day stem”.In Chinese astrology, the attribute for the day
is typically the one that is most attributed
to your personality, the one that most describes
“who you are”.Thus, for instance, your chart could say:
(let me make one up)
Hour: Rabbit, Fire
Day: Sheep, Earth
Month: Dragon, Metal
Year: Dog, FireThus the Day stem has animal Sheep and element Earth.
So the person’s personality would be most described
by the Sheep animal and element Earth. Each of the four above can also be subdivided into
Yin and Yang as well, but let’s not get into that. Now there is also a mathematical calculation that
can be done where a composite aggregate of all 4
can be put together to come up with a total
percentage of your constitution for each element. For instance, you can get a readout like:
Metal 43%
Wood 21%
Fire 18%
Earth 10%
Water 8%This “composite” represents an overall composite
of your constitution. It typically represents
the ordering of strongest organ systems to the
weakest organ systems . . . those having the
“most energy” (possibly even hyperactive) to those
having the least energy (possibly very deficient). What is confusing here is that when the composite
is calculated, the organ system with the highest
percentage may or may NOT be the same as the element
in your day stem.I.E. in the list above, metal came in highest at 43%;
but the element in the person’s day stem (which
is supposed to correspond to personality) may not
be metal (it could be, but it could be something else). When there is a great discrepancy between the two,
it means something like “you are not expressing your
personality well” due to it being deficient with
respect to the organ system that is the strongest.I am, by no means, an expert in Chinese astrology,
but that should give you some food for thought,
and give you an idea of how to answer adel’s question.Maybe bagua will ring in at some point to provide
a more detailed (more educated) post.S
June 12, 2012 at 2:29 pm #39389Wow, adel!
What a deeply personal and intimate sharing! As a forum reader, I feel deeply moved by your sharing,
and can appreciate–if only from an outside perspective–
just what such a sharing means.I am sorry you had to go through such a trauma.
For that, I offer a hug.Your reaction, in the moment, was a natural one,
and very human. You were being very authentic,
and sometimes that is exactly what is needed to
do . . . to begin to process traumatic events.Even so, I feel the strength in your words,
and am sure that even through a tragedy, you
have managed to find a silver lining in strength
and growth from the event. If you ever wish to talk further about it,
and want to discuss one-on-one, feel free to
contact me directly . . .In any event, I honor and respect your sharing
in this post, and send you a warm smile. Thanks again, and I am glad you are also
beginning to experience the centered grounding
experience I’ve been posting about.Best always,
