The only tool is to watch the mind, slow it down to catch the unfoldment the mind and eventually “stop the mind.” Then you start to get the power of choice. But, you still have to make that choice. 😉 Practically speaking, I recommend a book by The Professor. If you are interested I will tell you which one. This is more practical then seeking samadhi, IMO.
To attain samadhi requires years of preparation or the karma for it. Most don’t have it, so it is setting an unrealistic goal.

Would you please explain what your or Nan’s definition of Samadhi is? I have come across so many definitions and even definitions of various stages of it. One of which is of having transcended ego (stopping the mind) as the first stage of samadhi. The deeper states might be equated to God Realization or Reunion of Man and Tao. And deeper appear to be where people go so deep they outwardly appear to be gone and inwardly are so deep that they have no individual awareness.
What is interesting to me is that in my experience with HT the ego transcendance stage is missing yet higher stages can be realized. So in fact the two exist at the same time. I have experience what other traditions call stopping the mind and it is a very amazing thing, like having your reset button pushed. Just pure awareness with no internal dialog. I would agree that although the deeper stages feel better, it is more practical in life to be able to stop the inner chatter and live from your spirit. Not easy to do and there is always weeding of the garden to be done it seems.

July 14, 2005 at 10:22 pm #6244The difference between visualization and actualization:
the imagination is actualized when the “yi” (creative mind intent) is functioning from it owns center, expresses its own authenic chi, and is not filtered through the head and superimposed as an empty visualization onto the body from above. That is why the alchemical training is progressive. If you develop the chi in step one, it moves in step two. If you don’t develop step 1, step 2 becomes empty visualization.

July 14, 2005 at 10:27 pm #6246I personally asked Chang if he had ever gone deep into meditation, and he said he didn’t believe it was necessary. Just balance everything else out, and all would be taken care of. It’s just a different path than alchemy.
As for “speed of electricity” and light vs. human consciousness, Chang has it all backward. Human consciousness is FASTER than speed of light or electicity, it is instantaneous because it is part of the total field of consciouness. So you can communicate instantly with stellar beings without travelling for light years to get there by mechanical means.

July 14, 2005 at 10:45 pm #6248this is also my experience.
July 14, 2005 at 10:49 pm #6250tom brown, jr., of the tracker school also dislikes visualization for the same reasons. he talks about “envisioning” which is the same as michael’s actualization. although i think actualization is a better term for semantical reasons. it takes the seeing part out and puts in the actual.
