I’m toying with the idea of matching all 8 trigrams of the Bagua to chakras, and possibly to Platonic solids as well. The bottom three seem pretty clear (maybe). Earth=cube, (root chakra, Earth trigram), Water=icosahdron (2nd chakra, lower tantien, water trigram), fire=tetrahedron (3rd chakra, fire trigram), and MAYBE Metal=air=octahedron (4th chakra, middle tantien, LAKE Trigram maybe?), and maybe next Wood=ether=dodecahedron (5th chakra, Thunder Trigram).
Will you help?
All comments welcome.
April 13, 2005 at 5:59 pm #4324I think that the chakras, energy phases and trigrams are not perfect complements.
The chakras seem to be about transendence, where one chakra is higher (and inclusive?) than the other.
The energy phases are in a cycle, with none higher or lower than the other (although fire and water are more basic, since they come first cosmologically).
The trigrams…seem to be used to represent anything; the same symbol may mean very different things depending on the context in which it is used. Yes, energy phases and trigrams have been related, but that came later, after they had both been used independently.
For the chakras and kundalini, it seems that using hexagrams might be more meaningful to show the path of accumulating yang energy.
Better to experience things as they are, not make them something they aren’t in some quest to please the brain.
my two cents…
April 13, 2005 at 8:10 pm #4326I guess you could tie you mind into knots trying to work this out. I dont know much about chakras or trigrams but aren’t the eight trigrams associated with the eight extraordinary vessels? Anyway here’s some dubious and uniformed suggestions cooked up after flipping through an account of the eight forces in Cosmic Healing II:
1) The four elemental platonic solids (earth, water, fire and air) can be associated with the four phases of the Pakua (Tai Yin, Shao yang, Shao Yin, Tai Yang) thus giving two hexagrams per solid. An Obvious one would be to attribute Tai Yin (Great Yin) to earth matching Kun (Earth) and Ken (Mountain) with the cube. Haven’t a clue how to attribute the others. A wild stab at the rest could be: Shao Yang (Small Yang) to water matching Kan (Water) and Sun (Wind) with the icosahedron. Shao Yin (Small Yin) to fire matching Chen (Thunder) and Fire (Li) to the tetrahedron. Tai Yang (Strong Yang) to air matching Lake (Tui) and (Heaven) to the octahedron. The dodecahedron for the universe could be attributed to Grand Ultimate Tai Ji.
2) Perhaps the Platonic Solids can be attributed to the following power centres in the body:
cube – earth – first chakra (including feet)
icosahedron – water – second chakra
tetrahedron – fire – third & fourth chakras
octahedron – air – fifth and sixth chakras
dodecahedron – universe – seventh chakra3) So for your project a nice bang out table could be:
Platonic Solid Element Chakra Trigrams
—————————————————————————
Cube Earth 1st Earth & Mountain
Icosahedron Water 2nd Water & Wind
Tetrahedron Fire 3rd & 4th Thunder & Fire
Octahedron Air 5th & 6th Lake & Heaven
Dodecahedron 7th Grand Ultimate Tai JiNow if anyone here half suspected that I was a duffer – well now you know. 😉

April 13, 2005 at 8:14 pm #4328Sorry last table didn’t translate well:
Cube – Earth – 1st chakra – Earth & Mountain
Icosahedron – Water – 2nd chakra – Water & Wind
Tetrahedron – Fire – 3rd & 4th chakras – Thunder & Fire
Octahedron – Air – 5th & 6th chakras – Lake & HeavenDodecahedron – 7th chakra – Grand Ultimate Tai Ji

Goddess of Earth.April 15, 2005 at 2:18 am #4332I did post a reply to this question where it was originally posted.
To comment on Rex’s ideas. There are many creative ways to views the eight trigrams. But the standard five phase interpretation of them has fire and water trigram (kan / li) as primal phases, i.e. not paired.
Thunder and wind trigrams are wood phase.
Mountain and Earth trigrams are earth phase.
Lake and Heaven trigrams are gold (metal) phase.

The association of heaven with gold is an alchemical one, in my opinion.michael
