OK, so I keep getting e-mails about Thick Black Theory, and how it’s the new Art of War, Is this true and is it worth looking into. I saw that Mao used it when he was a revolutionary, but that kind of turned me off to it, but I don’t want to judge a theory by those that used it. Though there seemed to be an interesting history I am not sure exactly what it is and whether I should even care. Can anyone help me out with any info you may have? Thanks

July 13, 2009 at 5:33 pm #31901Shenchi, are you on Jonathan’s email list, or someone else’s who’s talking about Jonathan’s stuff? He said that other email list people are talking about TBT also. If you’re getting it form someone else, go to this website:
http://thickblacktheory.net/tbt/July 18, 2009 at 5:56 pm #31903It’s for sale now, but not for long. Interestingly, they even have their own martial art that you get to learn as part of the package. Act quickly if you want it, they’re down to less than 20 copies.
RyanJuly 23, 2009 at 12:11 pm #31905OK, so I ordered it and I am not so impressed yet. Maybe there is a wealth of information in here that I haven’t gotten to yet, but so far zilch. It’s basically saying be selfish and cruel and you will succeed. I have no clue what it really has to do with Taoism though, or why it came to me through a Taoist E-mail list. It is not very clear either, and bases it’s assumptions on the selfishness of a baby and three Chinese rulers who were cruel and selfish and succeeded. Like I said maybe I will find something useful in the last third of the information, but so far it is basically a justification for the idea of by any means necesary, and a retelling of the ideas of Machiavelli or Aton LaVey. Not really my thing, but I will finish it up and let you know if I find some silver lining of some sort.

ShenchiJuly 23, 2009 at 4:51 pm #31907OK, so the last 3rd of the Thick Black Theory material is actually useful. It is all about leadership and how to test peoples character and what not. So this is where the interesting stuff is. The Thick Black Strategy. Anyway I will keep you informed as I go.

ShenchiJuly 23, 2009 at 8:03 pm #31909Hey Shenchi,
Glad to hear you got it, I downloaded it too. I think one of the main things about it that relates to Taoism is that it helps you to strip away social conditioning to become a True Person. You’ve probably gone through more of the material than I have at this point, but I agree that the Strategy section is very useful, and I think that a study of it can help one to understand the rest, also the Understanding section. So far it has helped me to simply make better decisions in my daily life.

RyanJuly 24, 2009 at 8:31 am #31911Ryan,
Yeah I have to retract what I origially said. I can totally see how it relates to Taoism now. The strategy part is really gold. If anyone is in a leadership position, be it sports, business, or political, I would highly recommend it. It basically lays out how to be a leader and how to tackle different situations. It is a definite expansion of Sun Tzu, and is just as useful, if not more. Again I will post more as I get through it. The Strategy section is really long, something like 10 sections, so when I finish it I will give a little more detail. Until then,Peace & Tao
