note: from a chinese medicine point of view, this suggests that over-tonifying the spleen/stomach with sugars eventually leads to yin vacuity of the stomach, that results in our trying to fill it with more food rather than internal chi. – Michael
KILLER CARBS — MONASH SCIENTIST FINDS THE KEY TO OVEREATING AS WE AGE
Monash University / EruekAlert!

A Monash University scientist has discovered key appetite control cells in
the human brain degenerate over time, causing increased hunger and
potentially weight-gain as we grow older. The research by Dr Zane Andrews, a neuroendocrinologist with Monash
University’s Department of Physiology, has been published in Nature.Dr Andrews found that appetite-suppressing cells are attacked by free
radicals after eating and said the degeneration is more significant
following meals rich in carbohydrates and sugars.“The more carbs and sugars you eat, the more your appetite-control cells are
damaged, and potentially you consume more,” Dr Andrews said.Dr Andrews said the attack on appetite suppressing cells creates a cellular
imbalance between our need to eat and the message to the brain to stop
eating.“People in the age group of 25 to 50 are most at risk. The neurons that tell
people in the crucial age range not to over-eat are being killed-off.“When the stomach is empty, it triggers the ghrelin hormone that notifies
the brain that we are hungry. When we are full, a set of neurons known as
POMC’s kick in.“However, free radicals created naturally in the body attack the POMC
neurons. This process causes the neurons to degenerate overtime, affecting
our judgement as to when our hunger is satisfied,” Dr Andrews said. The free radicals also try to attack the hunger neurons, but these are
protected by the uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2).Dr Andrews said the reduction in the appetite-suppressing cells could be one
explanation for the complex condition of adult-onset obesity.“A diet rich in carbohydrate and sugar that has become more and more
prevalent in modern societies over the last 20-30 years has placed so much
strain on our bodies that it’s leading to premature cell deterioration,” Dr
Andrews said.Dr Andrews’ next research project will focus on finding if a diet rich in
carbohydrates and sugars has other impacts on the brain, such as the
increased incidences of neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease.August 24, 2008 at 2:53 pm #28939I think we all hear you loud and clear, and thank you for your perspective. My hope is that you do not fall into a very dispowering roll of the victume and instead accept your anger and see this as part of your development, it is the life forces brutal honest. For every victum there is an abuser (yin yang). I think now you can see the definite need to take greater power and responcibility for your wealth, health, safety, and spiritual development, instead of searching out a new parental figure or demanding the current one to change.
If you wish to get into protesting and activism, this is a great resource http://www.youtube.com/user/talkingsticktv. Ofcourse I choose to resolve polarities and disharmonies in the macro internaly through fusion and kan & li but activism has its place as a wonderfull way of communicating or mirroring back to leaders that what they are doing is creating greater dis harmony.I hope you find the space of peace and acceptance that you can better deal with these disharmonys.
chi in I am outAugust 24, 2008 at 4:10 pm #28941August 24, 2008 at 11:29 pm #28943I don’t know what “wheat meat” is, but I think the article is mostly talking about junk foods that contain a lot of what Dan Marino called “bad carbs” in those commercials he used to be in talking about the “glycemic advantage”…and they obviously contain a lot of sugar…
August 24, 2008 at 11:33 pm #28945but the article didn’t make that distinction, so maybe not…

August 27, 2008 at 1:14 pm #28949Hi Stalker,
I’ve mellowed. Into- Less news, less opinions.. I’m drawing my circle of interest closer to me. Starting my thoughts w/ ‘I don’t know..’
I strive for pronoia, a state of thinking that is Everything is going to turn out just fine.
I have the luxury of not being effected by the Russian/Georgian conflict and the 100% knowledge that nothing I do will effect the situation there one iota.
I used to analyze issues, pride myself on seeing all sides of them, be willing to argue any side (mostly against what I considered extremem points of view). Now I see it as youthful egoic masterbation. Not my thing any more.
Yours
Michael
